Default 295 Robins some times smokes

Hi. My cart has a 295cc robins and I have a issue that I’m trying to figure out the best way to solve. When you first start the cart it will smoke bad but then very quickly dissipates. If you drive it nice at about half throttle it won’t smoke but if you stomp on it will smoke. Also if you are going down hill and are off the throttle it will puff a big smoke when you get back on the throttle. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Check your compression and post back results.

Agreed worth checking compression.

Sounds pretty much like a textbook description of bad valve seals.

But, if you need to pull the motor to pull the head and do valve seals (because you cant get the timing belt off without removing the clutch which you cant.get.out without removing the motor...) you may as well replace the rings and check everything else.while you're in there.

Any chance you can presureize the cyl at TDC pull the valve cover and put a rag in the head to cover return holes and pull the keepers and Springs and change the seals that way

But in the same breath if you pull the valve cover and see a big difference in valve adjustment screws then you may need to pull the head anyhow

I've done exactly that in cars countless times. But on a golf cart, it's so easy/quick to just pull the engine and do it on the bench I'd just pull the motor and redo everything. If the valve seals are bad the rest of the motor will likely need some love anyways. May as well freshen everything and be good for another 15-20 years

Had a brand new Subaru 4 stroke 6.5hp connected to 2 inch water pump. Smoked like crazy on start up and under load.

Changed the oil to SAE 30 and never smoked since.

EzgoTXT2002, if I could make em stop smoking with magic I would. In his case I think compression reading would work for us to try and see what's wrong

That's not "terrible" but it is pretty low. Should be around 160-170. Check the valve clearances and pay close attention to the intake valves. If they have a lot more threads showing when properly.adjustrd than the exhaust valves, then the valves are finished and need to be replaced

Adjusting the valves may not fix the smoke but may bring compression to where it is supposed to be. But sounds like a rebuild is in your future, dont be scared it's not hard.
