I am working on a 295. No telling how much money has been spent trying to make this engine run right before the person called me. I bring out the compression tester and it had a little over 185 pounds of compression on both cylinders , which a on the high side. I decided I had better look closer. My compression tester is accurate also.

After looking under the valve cover I noticed the all too common issue with intake valves showing more threads than the exhaust . I decided to dig more and into it found out it is one notch out of time.. Yet it had almost 190 pounds of compression.

For some reason the pictures are turned to the left. If you look real close though you will see the key way is one notch to the left of mark. Look at 2nd picture. Top cam mark is lined dead on it. My photo work is not very good but I can assure you the top cam is lined up on the money . Someone put it up like this and told him all was good. It continued to run bad and they told him it was nothing else they could do.

Working behind someone that rebuilt this engine last year. This is a first for me with an engine out of time one notch and having 185 pounds of compression.

Maybe its time I do something else Not sure why I say yes when I am retired but I do.

May be a lot of carbon buildup on the pistons causing the compression to be high? I wouldnt think timing would have any effect on the compression, but maybe the valves open a tooth later like this so.it has a little extra time for compression?

Interesting. Always love going in behind someone else. It always unravels a ball of fun seeing all the corners they cut too

I got a setup on my workbench where I can turn the engine over and check compression . I have not removed the head so I am going to remove belt and put it back in time.

Unless someone shaved the head and maybe a little carbon on top of pistons I cannot answer why the high compression. I actually never thought about it. Don't think I have ever seen compression on one of these 9hps that high.

When I get the timing back in place correct and drive clutch installed I will find out just what is going on. It won't take long to do my test.

Tomorrow I may sweep the floor. I know I can do that unless I trip over the broom

How would that affect valve timing ? ignition timing yes but not valve timing unless I am missing something

This engine actually looks new on the outside. No oil leaks anywhere. They had tried different ignition parts, carbs, you name it and I think it had been done except check the valve timing. True, wouldn't change it to being a notch off.

If the crank key were missing the timing gear would just spin on the crankshaft and the cam/valves wouldnt turn at all. It's probably just pushed back a bit

Stovebolt, for some reason I thought you were talking about the other crank key, flywheel side. It has been a bad day so forgive me You have a valid point. I think I remember seeing it but now I got to go look. It it were missing I would agree with CP241 though. Let me ride back and look to make sure.

Technically that is not the crank key . Its the balance shaft key and yes I was right, it's in there. I was beginning to doubt myself but I knew I looked.

That's what threw me off when you said crank key This engine was just put up out of time. The timing belt looks great and not loose. Not sure how someone missed this unless they didn't pull the engine out where they could see. I am placing my bets that's what happened. They were trying to get it to run correct and thought the timing belt was off when all the time the intake valves were the problem. The top cam gear is also good and nothing missing on it.

I am going to put it in time and doing it over this weekend just to see how much difference the compression shows. Maybe next month I will do this because I am going to do what I do best. Clean my shop tomorrow

Hope I don't get mugged at this shop this late at night but I just had to know
