Default motor rebuild problem

hi all,so i just rebuilt my 93 ezgo motor and on the first start up there was a knock so i pulled it apart again found nothing of concern . so i put it back together still doing the same thing the funny thing is if i take the valve cover off and cover the oil port it no longer knocks but it on and it knocks.before i rebuilt it did not have a knock though it just smoked.
any ideas?

loose rocker arm or is the rocker arm hitting the cover or not enough oil pressure on your bearings and when you cover the the hole its allowing to build a little more pressure

Thanks for the input i was thinking the lack of oil pressure but what could i do to increase the pressure the mechanical pump seems to be in pretty good shape.

are you sure the pump is primed? did you push some Assembly lube in the pump rotors before you put the cover on

did you replace the valves or cut the seats? it sounds like the rockers are hitting the cover
