Default 1989 2cycle Ez Go Marathon Crank Seal Help

Hey guys,

I bought this 89” Marathon and have pretty much done everything to it. Got it up and running finally, but noticing it’s running way better in reverse, sometimes I’m forward needs choked 1/4 or 1/8th inch or it seems to be losing power.

Top end of motor and everything has been rebuilt already. All I can really think of would be my crankshaft seals needing replaced?

I have the manual for this cart, and have done lots of research online and am fairly comfortable changing them..I just can’t find any good visuals showing the work done (pics or videos) just to be sure. Does anyone have anything I can reference or any tips to make this go as smoothly as possible? Thanks in advance!

Josh

I have pics of my total rebuild but probably won't help you much as the crank wasn't in when I put the new seals in, Here's the link IF you want to see them anyway

It’s not too hard to replace the seals. It’s just getting the flywheel off that’s hard. You have to get creative with it. The clutch side one is easy to get to.

Thanks guys!! I think those pics will help me Dabble, that’s what I was looking for.

I tried to get started on it tonight, but can’t get the **** fan cover bolts off? Sprayed with PB plaster and WD40 and still feel like I’m going to strip the screws out whenever I try to crank on them.

Any tips on getting those out easier? Or am I going to have to use a drill-bit and just get new screws?

I think I remember someone using a trailer hitch and a big hammer until the engine fell to the ground below

No – it wasn’t that crude! I screwed the flywheel up to some 2 x 4’s and hung the engine on some sawhorses and beat on the crankshaft until the engine fell. That was a learning experience a couple years ago. It actually helped me figure out how NOT to do it when I got another two stroke more recently!

Those flywheels are a piece of cake to remove.

It only took me 5 hours last year to remove one after it was on the workbench.

I at one time had my sledgehammer in my hand. I was going to bust the entire engine with it

Haha..guys..I haven’t even got to the flywheel yet. I’m talking the simple fan shroud cover! These screws seem like they are garbage!

I’ve seen a few ideas to make the flywheel part easier. I inspected my clutch seal with a flash light and also did the starter fluid test and am 99% positive that one is good for now. If I’m yanking the motor anyways I’ll probably spend the extra $6 and just change it.

Is there any tests for the front seal so I know for sure before even going through all this? Can’t really spray the fluid into that one.
