Default 3PG keeps blowing exhaust gaskets...

Just like the title says- I’m on my third one now. I’m making the muffler tight but they only last a month or so. I can tell because it suddenly gets very loud!

What causes this?

Probably a warped flange on the exhaust pipe.

Good idea- I’ll check it when the new gasket comes. Might have to put it on the belt sander.

Or a restricted exhaust. Excessive back pressure from a partially clogged muffler can blow out gaskets. If not clogged too much it can still run decent. Eventually it will worsen though and cause issues with it running at all. If you havent already, certainly wouldnt hurt to bbq it. Especially since you rescued this one as a flood survivor. Who knows what's in there.

I guess I should bbq it. I haven’t done that with this one.

How hot do you need to get it?
I bought a gasket yesterday and within 2 hours I blew it out.

4 cycles as yours hardly ever plug up, 2 cycles another story.

I used a fire pit, and a half dozen 2-3" round logs stacked around it. Little kerosene to get it to light and it started smoking after about 10 minutes. I let it burn for around 30 minutes like a flamethrower out both ends. Once it started to slow down and the logs were about gone I used a long blow tip and blew compressed air into it for a minute into each end. Let it cool on the concrete for a few hours, wiped whatever soot was on the outside off (which wasn't much) and installed it. Pushed it outside and ran it in neutral for a but to blow out the soot inside (left a couple nice black patches on the grass lol) and been great ever since.

My issue wasnt that the muffler was "plugged up" so much, as it smoked like a train after about 5 minutes of driving (about the time the muffler got hot enough to burn the oil inside it). The motor this muffler came from smoked badly, for a very long time. The bbq flamethrower on this was bigger than any 2 stroke muffler I've ever cooked...

But if you've got a 295 or 350, it's more likely the lower muffler mounting bolt (on the frame behind the tire) is not tight, and all the weight and support for your muffler and exhaust is on the 2 studs bolting it to the head. My workhorse did the same thing, I didnt even know that bolt was there. I tightened it up and never had an issue again (with the exhaust at least lol)
