MCI has the exhaust manifold being part of the head itself. Non-MCI has the exhaust manifold bolted onto the head as a separate component-that's the most noticeable difference.

The MCI wasn't made as long as the pre-MCI and in most cases--isn't as popular. Parts are expensive for them--the ignitor alone goes for $1000! There won't be as many used heads that are even good for a series made for less time than its predecessor. any remaining parts will be severely marked up.

FYI another thing to make it harder to find parts is that there are two variants of the twin-cylinder re: cubic inches.

I've read about how to physically tell the difference between Pre MCI and MCI engines with the exhaust manifold but was wondering how do I know if I have found a 295 MCI head and not a 350 head when I come across one?

Can I use a Pre MCI head on my MCI engine? I'd have to get the cast exhaust manifold also. Would the exhaust bolt up still? Is there any difference in PRE MCI and MCI heads besides the exhaust manifolds? I don't mind having to do some exhaust work if a Pre MCI head will work since I have found a few of those for sale but zero 295 MCI heads.

Completely different. In no way will they interchange. These are different engines so the heads will not work.

I think I've got a bare 295 MCI head (no cam or rocker arm assembly) but I'd have to get $250 plus shipping for it.Factory/OEM parts are getting harder & harder to find for these great little engines.

Can you double check and see if it is a MCI 295 head and post a couple pictures? I should be able to use my cam and rocker arms from my head on it.
