Default 2003 TXT clutch problem

I am a new golf cart owner. I have a 2003 TXT that the clutch does not engage until the rpms increase and then slams into gear. Does the clutch need to been cleaned or adjusted? If so how does it come apart? Does it have to be removed from the cart? It has an almost new belt. I am prety sure it is a clutch problem. I have found the fourm very helpful. Thanks

Welcome jn... Are you sure the belt is good? It should measure
1-3/16" wide. Are you sure it is the proper length belt? I've never seen a TXT clutch slam in on engagement. If I remember correctly, the oe clutch has rollers in it. Has the cart sat for a long period of time? I suppose if it had a ton of wear it could bind and then slam in, but I wouldn't think an '03 could have that much time on it... Is the belt at the top, or close to the top of the driven clutch?

dirtysouth I did measure and it is 1 1/8 wide. Will 1/16 make that much diffrence? Maybe slam is not the right word but it does engage hard, and makes a noise some times like it is sticking.

The narrower belt will cause the cart to pull out at a higher gear. Kinda like tryin' ta pull out in 2nd gear in a car. This will create a chatter on a golf cart. Check the inside of the belt for cracks and the sides of the belt for burning. If it's burnt, it will have a shiny gloss look on the sides. It sounds like an old belt. You can jack the rear of the cart up and watch the engagement. It should be smooth and start to climb the drive clutch gradually upon acceleration.

I agree with DS about the belt thing. sometimes turning the belt around will stop it from jerking like that, but I can't think of this happening were it wasn't caused by the belt. sticking clutches will still let the belt slide some when they engage and not slam like the belt grabbing does

OK I put a new belt on tonight. I think it does improve the performance but.... I still have the same problem. The clutch does not move into the belt until the rpms are up and then when it does it is all at once. Shouldn't it move in slowly? From a stop this causes the cart to jerk forward not start off smothly. Once the cart is moving it works smoth.

Where is the belt sitting in the rear clutch? It should be at the top or very close to the top.

I don't know for sure. I will check but I don't think it is that close to the top. What does that mean if it isn't?

That would allow the belt to be loose on the drive clutch and make it pull out hard like you are talking about...
