Default Anyone actually like Oil injection?

I am in process of restoration of an 85 Marathon and have the motor out. I am having a dilemma ss to what to do with the oil system. I have read and heard much about removal, but wondering if anyone knows these to actually fail. Does anyone have an argument in favor of the pump? I don't mind mixing, but am thinking about others using the machine, and possible sale down the road.

I’d disable it and premix it and leave it all in tact for resale purposes. But I’m not trusting my engine to that system... It’s fine right up to the point it malfunctions and wrecks your motor

How do know when the injection system fails? One of 2 ways. Either it fails wide open and dumps oil like crazy, leaving lots of smoke and fouled plugs (this would be the better case scenario). Or... it fails and you find out its failed when the motor seizes up.

Not much middle ground, it's one or the other. I'd premix and use a quality oil like amsoil

I would premix. I had an oil injection pump fail several years ago and seized the piston in the cylinder on a wave runner I had. Turns out the filter from the oil tank got plugged and wasn't drawing oil into the pump. Premix and you know for a FACT the motor is getting oil.

I would keep it, many say be done with it. The pumps rarely fail if at tune up time you make sure it is adjusted correctly. do not mix oils, 2 stock oils can inter act with each other and plug things up. If it fails for to much oil you know it with the smoke, if it fails to the lean side, you will not smell the typical 2 stock oil smell,

I don't trust them. Like others have said, not worth the risk. I unhook it from my outboard motors too.

I could see this as a legitimate concern. The puny filter on that line is scary.
I think other than that and possible air infiltration, it looks pretty safe. I'm eager to give it a test to see how it performs, so will probably give it a try for a tank and see how I feel about it. Thank you.

Coach Bob: you're welcome. I just hate the thought of not knowing if my engine is getting oil or not. At any given time you could have a filter plug or air induction and never know until it's too late. That's the only thing I worry about after seizing a motor. Most mechanical problems you know about right away on any given thing. Run out of fuel, motor stops, motor knocking, something is loose or broken, blow a radiator hose, car overheats and you stop before damage is done. Oil pump failure, you don't know and you trash the motor.
But, there again, everyone is going to have a different opinion. I just speak from being a transmission mechanic for over 15 years and having a motor fail because of it.

Good luck with your restoration. Fun to take on a project and seeing the end results.

Well, i might not be keeping the oil injection after all. I mangled up the slot trying to remove the flywheel without good thought process. I can probably restore it somewhat so that it will turn the pump, but i don’t even have the @#$& flywheel off yet. I’ve removed many a flywheel, but this one tops them all! Just read a thread where a member used some hammer taps around the rim to break it loose while under puller tension. I guess I’ll try that.

Sir I'm not sure what you have done and are trying to do. But I would not do anything else until somebody familiar with that system chimes in.
