The latest: An '86 EZGO Marathon

Hey all I sold http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...-exploder.html and scored an unmolested '86 EZGO Marathon gas 2-stroke and have no idea about doing any wrenching on this jewel ....... Heres what I do know ...........

It came from the original owner that lived on a golf course in Central Florida and put into the garage about 3 years ago, and just got another. He said it acted like it was losing power and thought it was due to overheating. In reading all I can find in here the "clogged muffler syndrome" sounds like what one of the problems were. If anybody has owned one of these or are familiar with them, by all means post some tips on where to start. Or perhaps post a link

Everything seems to be here. Will check compression tomorrow and post those in the evening ..... and do all the things I do know to do like make sure gas is being delivered to the fuel-pump/carb, pull the carb apart and make sure the varnish has been cleaned out and probably rinse the gas tank out to get rid of the crud thats surely in there

What I'm curious right now is ........ how do you know that the oil-pump is operating properly .......

In the owners manual it says to run 2 stroke oil in the gas even though it has an oil injector. Question: Is that so the engine has the chance to run long enough for the pump to pick-up and pump oil via the reservoir/tank?



This is the first time I've gotten the original owners manual and key with anything (except my '03 Silverado)

Nice cart, don't see them in that kind of condition much. I don't really know about the oil question, could be a model right after the carts that didn't have the injector and they hadn't changed the manual yet. on others setups that are similar I disconnect the line and cycle the engine (sparkplug wire off) over to see if it's working. i'd run pre-mixed in it anyway, better safe than sorry.

Nice cart! I have an 86 Marathon 2 stroke. I just wish mine looked that good. No oil injector on mine. I pre mix. Good luck!

Boris we need to get together and have lunch sometime , first we were both working on hundai's now we both have 86 ezgo projects , It has been my experience with the oil pumps that if you pre mix the gas and use the pump also it is more likely to stop up the muffler and foul plugs , the extra oil don't seem to hurt anything else . clean the lower part of the exaust off real good and slide a baloon over the outlet turn the engine over and see if the baloon changes , it's too hard to turn the engine over and hold a hand over the outlet unless you are very tall or double jointed . wish mine looked as good as yours . mine is John Deere green and yellow .

Cool, we can do lunch for sure ........... I had rotator cuff surgery less than a month ago the arm doesn't work without pain so, eating and visiting is what I do best for now ..... I guess it'll be better when it stops hurtin' huh? They're talking 3 plus months before returning to any kind of strenuous anything. I think I'd have rather gotten the crap beaten out of me by several man-hating trucker-women from the Isle of Lesbia.

The balloon idea is a good one and I'll try that tomorrow. I was thinking the muffler was stopped up and I couldn't figure out how to check it so I figured I'd just pull it off and have one of those "muffler bar-b-cues" I had read about in here

I was just wondering how the oil pump worked ..... It looks like there's a small cam-lobe on the center shaft of the cooling fan that actuates the pump itself. But without some kind of a service manual the only way for me to tell is just start pulling stuff apart .......... and when I pull stuff apart without schematics, when I go to put things back together, I wind up with a bunch washers and sh*t that aren't needed Seeing as all the parts are still there and pretty fresh-looking ....... If I can restore this thing to good running condition ........... the way it was designed to work mechanically, I'd like to. Just once

Right now I'm trying to stay away from the lift and the tires, and the radio ...... You know, all the stuff you want to add, but don't actually need.

Give me shout and let me know your schedule. Maybe we can meet in Thomasville and chew the fat ........ and then hit a country-cooking buffet-line or something ....... .

UPDATE:
Checked the compression today and ended up with about 48 lbs . the thing would run (barely) without the muffler on it .......... hook it up and it didn't like it at all. Pulled everything apart and will start looking all of the dealer items to restore this thing as close to stock as possible.

I was thinking the oil pump quit working but when I blew through the lines absolutely nothing the. Anyway the pistons looked pretty decent other than the scuffing on the sides (pics) the Cyls I think it will all clean up with a cross-hatch hone ..... we'll see.

The rings both just snapped in pretty much the same place







Not that bad I think ...... At least it wasn't straight out trashed

Your right the cart is in real nice condition. The body even has a shine. Look at the bright side parts for that cart are pretty cheap.

That looks like the aftermath of using cheap "no-name" 2-cycle oil, and never running the cart hard enough to get it warm enough to burn everything out.. I'd install a new top end kit, and feed it nothing but good brand name TCW-III rated 2-cycle outboard oil.. Periodically get it on the road and "air" it out good to keep the carbon burned out, and it should have a long happy life..
