Default Jerky take offs and belt size question

Greetings.

I am a new cart owner (1998 EZ Go Gas) and it has a few minor issues I need to take care of.

When taking off the engine has to rev quite a bit before it moves. When it moves the cart lurches or jerks. Not a smoking the rear tire thing, but doesn't seem normal.

I removed the larger drive belt and verified the outer part of the clutch is moving inward to engage the belt that drives the rear set. It snaps in at a pretty low RPM with a really loud click so I don't think the clutch is the problem.

Is there a rule of thumb on the larger belt and how loose / tight it should be? The starter / generator belt is super tight, but the 2nd larger belt is super loose. 4" or more of travel and I can easily remove the larger belt with no tools or even pulling hard.

Also the engine starts and rev's fine, but when driving at near tops speed it catches the RPM limiter pretty quickly leading me to believe the belt is slipping at that end of the range as well.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what size belt to buy? The markings are all gone from my belt. Measuring it seems like a bad idea since I don't know how big it was originally and don't know how much to subtract.

I searched the forums and didn't see where anyone posted the size of the belts.

thanks in advance.

My existing belt is about 7/8th of an inch wide and about 42.75 OD

AS a note my cart will not move at all under generator / starter power.

It would seem by your measurements that you really need a new belt. Look in the ezgo gas tech section at the thread... shorter belts and 28deg clutch
This thread will give you some insight to the belts and what you may want or need

Read this; http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ezgo-...en-clutch.html

There's a lot of info here. If you call one of our site sponser's and tell them that you want a new stock length belt or a one inch shorter belt they will send you what you need.

I went with a one shorter belt because I had the same jerky take off and I'm extremely happy with it.

Good luck

I know belts are not cheap but I would say you should replace with a stock size belt and see what it does. Your old worn belt is not grabing the primary clutch at its lowest ratio and will cause jerky starts.

Thanks for all the info. I ordered the stock belt today.

I do have one more question. When I put the belt on, should the cart move under generator / starter power?

sometimes the shorter belts will till they get run a bit but for a stock one usually not.

check the surface of both your clutches, if you see or feel a "wavy" area, then that would explain your belt grabbing like it does. Belts wear generally on the sides since the clutch face puts pressure on the side of the belts. A new belt will help but if the clutch face is worn then you may have the same trouble once the new belt breaks in. Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. All of your advice was spot on. It ran great after replacing the belt. I now have a new problem, go figure. I will post a new topic.
