Default 91 GXI 1500 Re-Power

I have a 91 EZ GO GXI 1500(i think based on pics posted on this site)3 wheeler utility, with a 20 or 22hp Onan shaft drive. I bought it for the wife to do her lawn gardening. The problem with it is there is no excelleration. It idles great but it wants to stall out when you press the pedel. All linkages work and the butterfly moves. I do notice fuel droplets fly up from the carb(Nikki 6100) while running. I tore apart the carb and cleaned all ports, needles and float. Still, the same problem.
With Onan parts being expensive(almost $100.00 for head, intake, exhaust, and tappet access gaskets), I was wondering what alternative powerplants can be used as a mod/replacement. Any suggestions??
Thanx,
Chopper Tom

I don't know much about those models but i'd try some common things like adjusting the valves first, maybe a compression test would gives some clues as to why it's not running right. It should be about the same as a cushman truckster, I know some models share the same drive train.

Compression checked out at 100psi per cylinder. In another forum (which I can't find now) two people had the same model and problem. 1 claimed that the intake valves are carboned up and is allowing air from the compression stroke to seep back into the carb throat, thus the fuel spraying up. 2 claimed he solved the same problem by replacing the carb with a new one. I pulled the heads and there is carbon build up inside(to no surprise). Next step(and cheapest) is clean the points and to throw it all back together and swap the carb from my Wheelhorse 520h onto the EZ GO(same motor). I'll post the results. I'm still interested in other motor options if anyone has some ideas.
Thanx,
