Default Needs More Power

I’m new to BGW. Love the site. I have an 87 EZGO two stroke. It starts easy and runs great on the roads. But it has problems pulling the hills on the trails. Some of the steeper ones it just couldn’t make it. The motor never stopped, but the cart did. Do I have a clutch/belt problem, or the common two stroke issue with the piston, rings and cylinder worn out in forward running direction?

ruredy - it's 120 psi forward or reverse, engine cold.

Thanks

I would suspect a driven clutch or belt problem then, 120psi is good. Belt should be 1 3/16" wide

The belt appears to be 1 3/16 wide. The belt says E-Z GO CAR 14153-61 DAYCO. It does look rather old and worn, but I would have thought if it was slipping I would hear it or smell it. Does the driven clutch have adjustments? Where do you recommend I start? Thanks.

No adjustment, i'd check the ramps and buttons on it they may be worn down. you have to take off the white cover to do that.

Thanks I'll do that. It looks like a good place to start, since it looks like the top dome and governor button on the end of the white cover is already missing! I'll let you know what I find.

ruredy,

I took the driven clutch apart. Nothing broken, the ramps and buttons look to be in good condition. The whole assembly was dry and stiff. Even after removing the retainer clips, to took some work to get it apart. Maybe just a good cleaning and lube will do the trick. What do you think? Thanks. nomo

Couldn't hurt I guess, lots of guys don't like to use grease/lube on the clutches, they say it traps dirt and makes them wear faster. maybe some graphite for lube would help anyway.......
given how clean things look in that pic (of what I can see) it looks as though the cart has been well cared for. Your problem must be elsewhere, looks like your governor is still hooked up. It could be your not getting WOT (wide open throttle) limiting how much power your engine is applying to the task, how steep of hills are we talking about?

Update - I disassembled the driven clutch, cleaned all parts and reassembled. The only thing I lubricated was the bushing that slides on the shaft. Put a new belt on it and a fully intact dust cover. I ran it on jack stands and watched the operation of both clutches. It was very smooth. Also checked to see that the gov was not preventing WOT. When road testing I didn't notice much difference, if any at all. It still seems to be very under powered when trying to pull a hill. The day before I tried to climb a trail hill maybe 35-40 degree, with out a run at it, it couldn't do it. I think the engine may be under powered. Maybe I need to check the timing, I'll figure out how to do that next.
