Default 87 gasser backfires/no start ran great till now

Hi all. I got an 87 ezgo gasser. Ran good but had really low compression so I did a top end rebuild including cylinder. Ran great for about 5 hrs. Run time then it started spuddering like the plug was fouling. Within another 10-15 mins. run time it got so bad that it would only fire the first few revs. When trying to start, and not start. Installed new plug, a few kicks and no start. Checked for spark and accidently pulled plug wire out of coil. Cut a few inches off the wire for a clean connection where it goes in the coil and stuffed it back in. Checked for spark and looks good. Still a few kicks and no start. Keep in mind every start attempt I pull the plug and dry it off as it's wet with gas. Thought the carb mabey has a few drops of water in it so pulled the carb and gas tank and cleaned real good. Put all back together, checked spark again. Tryed to start, kicked a few times then big exaust back fire. I'm wondering if I messed up the coil and spark isn't strong enough. It seems like timing is off. But don't know where/how to check that. Thanks in advance for any help. Also does any one know the correct spark plug for this motor. Thanks

Maybe a fuel pump problem...... ruptured diaphram..... filling crank case with gas.....the big back fire likely blew the seals out.

It has an aftermarket in line fuel pump that kicks on when you push the throttle. I hope your wrong about the seals. Thanks

Did you happen to check your compression again? Could be something as simple as the head loosened up and you lost compression. Being as you said it worked good after the rebuild, and you are getting good spark and a lot of gas to the plug.

I had similar symptoms when I put in an HEI ignition module til I changed the coil. Acted like it had jumped time..sputterred, backfired, etc. Can you get a different coil/coil wire to at least try?

I read somewhere in here that you can use an ehco weedeater coil is that true? I have an ehco dealer around the corner from me. Prob. A lot cheaper than $100 bucks. Mabey spark not strong enough.

Relax and take a systematic approach. You have fire but too muck gas right, hows the carb? Take it off and clean it then check the float settings. There may be a piece of trash or something in the inlet valve keeping it from closing all the way. that would cause too much fuel to flow into the bowl and consequently up the main jet flooding the engine out. It really won't take you more that about 20 mins to pop the carb and clean it.

I did the HEI conversion and she runs great. Had to switch the red and blue wires in the diagram.
