Default how do i determine TDC on EZ GO TXT 98

I am trying to adjust the valves on my 1998 TXT EZ GO.

I was able to determine from reading the very nice post (w/ pics) from Ruredy (thanks) on how do do this. My only question is how do I determine the TDC on EZ GO TXT 98 to then gap at .004? I understand I should do this on a cold engine and have actually tried it but pretty much guessed at Top Dead Center (TDC).

The cart is actually running much better, cranks right up.... so maybe I should not mess with it now. But there is a small doubt in my mind that it is accurate since I somewhat guessed at TDC/when to gap.

What I did was..... for each valve, I manually turned the crank shaft until the highest point on shaft was just about to push the lobe up and gapped it there.

its better to rotate the cam so highest point of the cam lobe is opposite of the rocker arm.

the manual in the tech thread shows exactly how to do it and has diagrams.

in other words, point the cam lobe down when adjusting
I know i've wrote this before but for all of you who aren't patient enough to try and use a feeler gage in there..... lots people who work on these cart turn the set screw till it just barely touches the valve, then back off a 1/4 of a turn and lock it down.

My 1998 ezgo gas TXT only runs good for short period.....It seems I have to adjust the valves about every 3 to 5 hours of runtime now.... to make the thing run good.... any ideas? Am I not adjusting correctly? After 3 to 5 hours it will not start until I adjust valves again.

Is it important which valve you adjust first, second, third or fourth? Or is it important that you only adjust one at a time..... I think I have actually loosened all valves at once and then adjusted to .004 with cam lobe pointing down. But I have noticed it is getting difficult to adjust enough to have a gap. That is I have had the set screw come all the way out trying to get a gap of .004.

i'm sorry to tell ya this but its very common on these engines, your intake valves are bad! the head of the valve becomes soft and pushes up into the head.
the only way to repair it is to remove the head and install new valves!

Unhappy Re: how do i determine TDC on EZ GO TXT 98

Thanks for the info and quick reply!

Ouch.... remove the head and install new valves.... sounds complicated and expensive? I play around with these things (adjust valves, change oil and spark plug, etc) but have never done major work on one. Any idea what something like that would cost if I took it to some ez-go dealership (ex., Smitty's golf carts in Bham, Al) to have it done...ball park?

I am assuming something like that is too complicated for a tinker-er to attempt.

Depends on his hourly labor rate and parts.
If you have a good manual and tools you could probably do it. You may need to remove the clutch to get the timing belt cover off. That takes a puller or some bolts from the hardware store. You will also need to seat the new valves. It's not very hard, but if it's new ground....
I'm in Anniston, you could try it yourself. If you got lost, you could load it up and bring it here. I know how to do it, and have the puller and seating compound.
I'll give you a rough estimate of what parts could be and what the minimum parts would be. I'm not trying to sell you a rebuild or anything. I can help you get it going a little cheaper. Since you'll be doing most of the labor..I'll PM you in an hour of two.
It really needs to be pulled apart to check the rocker arms before you purchase the parts. Talk to you later. Tony

i would say a dealer may charge around 385.00 and a small engine shop a little less, what condition is the rest of the engine in? in most but not all cases by the time the valves go bad the rest of the engine is getting tired.
i guess it comes down to the condition of the cart and how long your going to keep it, a rebuilt engine can be had for around 875.00 or less and you could change out yourself.
i hope this helped and let me know if you need help.
