84 marathon charging problem
my system is not charging the starter works fine, brushes are good, the voltage jumps all over about five time a second. I have grounded the common wire from the generator to checked the voltage regulator as i have read in previous posting and the reading does the same thing. I am thinking maybe the solinoid may not be passing the voltage after starting. My digital tester also reads the voltage jumping around when in the cart and not hooked up to the battery it is like an electrical feild is being produced. Any one have any advice?
thanks The Voth |

Re: 84 marathon charging problem
Can you be alittle more specific about "jumping around" ?

Re: 84 marathon charging problem
Shure i guess it is a little vague. The volts continualy change from 4-18 volts The meter does not hold a reading for more than a milla second. I had the starter generator off cleaned and under cut the armature. The starter works fine so i think all is ok in the starter generator. The test you suggested in a previous thread for the vr I have done. I am wondering if the inside contacts for the solinoid are not secured or burnt because i belive the charge must pass through it to complete the circut. The vibration of the cart might be causing the contacts inside not to seat proper?
thanks for replying and i am looking for any input you may have O GREAT ONE ! |

Re: 84 marathon charging problem
I would think if the contacts were burnt, your cart would be cutting out and not running smooth.

Re: 84 marathon charging problem
You might try cleaning all the grounds on the cart. Corrosion will sneak in underneath those connections and give you fits.

Re: 84 marathon charging problem
Yeah I have cleaned the main grounds . I have to check all the other unnoticed grounds like the F/R switch plate bolts to the frame and smaller wires

Re: 84 marathon charging problem
Sounds like the v/r is going/gone bad, it limits the volts by switching the current off/on around 14.5v. I forget exactly but it does this like 1600 times a second

Re: 84 marathon charging problem
Ruredy I have tried the bypass test with grounding the green common wire from the gen and had no change to the voltage but I agree the best thing is to relpace the vr and see what happens
thanks |
