I'm in the process of fixing up two 1987 Marathons that my kids have run into the ground. I'm going to put a lift kit on them as well as some ATV tires/wheels. Since they probably need some motor work anyway (piston & rings at least) are there any typical mods for these models that improve performance?
Thanks for your help. |

Hello NetMXer, welcome to BGW!!
If your going to go with a new piston and rings, boring out your cylinder .50 over and buying an over-sized piston and rings set will give you a little more performance. The usual tune up will help too. Air and fuel filter and a new plug do wonders for an engine. You may want to consider a clutch upgrade depending on the shape of the existing ones and what you are looking to get out of it. A simple mod is just to make sure the throttle cable it allowing the carb butterfly to open fully for full throttle. The cable stretches with time and can cause a lack of speed. Just watch the cable and butterfly while the pedal is being pressed (key OFF). A small allen wrench easily moves the collar to adjust it. Hope this helps ya a little bit. Feel free to ask as many questions as you want! Also, post some pics of your carts, we love pics! |
