Keeps cuttin out...
95ish Medalist.
Bought it burning oil, still does somewhat. But compression numbers are 140 or better. Carb was also crapped up when I got it so I got a full rebuild kit for the carb, and redid it.. This was a few months ago... When I FIRST got it together, I went out to Fort Wilderness with it. Ran great. However, after running it for a while and at low speeds where its cutting on and off(ie, down a sidewalk with people on it) it would backfire. Figure thats simply unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust from the ignition repeatedly being cut... Well, on Saturday afternoon took the cart up to my girlfriends property so she could entertain a bunch of kids while her dad and I worked on the pool. It would occasoinally cut out. Like it would run hard, then just die out where it didnt want to run. The starter always engages, but sometimes it seems it doesnt want to get any RPM going. Paddle the throttle a few times and it would take off... Few minutes later it would die, paddle the throttle and it would take off again. As time went on, it got worse, where it would constantly die. Backfiring again when it would. Got it back to the shop that night, pulled it off the truck halfway across the complex and it took forever to get it to the shop because it kept dying. Since it burns some oil, I figured maybe the plugs were fouled out. They really didnt look all that bad but changed them anyhow. No change. I disconnected the hose between the carb and the fuel pump. Energized the starter and it spits gas. Hooked it back up and noticed that basically you go to start it, after a few seconds the engine fires but immediately shuts back off. If you hold the starter on, it will crank for a few seconds, fire, run till the RPMs climb to half way, then shut back again and just crank then a couple seconds later fire off, rev up, shut back off. It does this choked or not. It does it if I hold the carb open(defeating the governer). Valves were also adjusted less than 6 hours of run time ago as well. Im wondering if it can be ignition related? I SHOULDNT have carb problems since the carb was rebuilt a few months ago, and it either runs great or not at all. Seems like it shuts itself down on its own. They do have some kind of revlimiter on them don't they? Something with the switches? is there any kind of switch that is in the shifter to limit RPM in neutral? It has gotten very wet at times, so I wouldnt be suprised if there was a contact that needed cleaned just not sure where to look. or if its possible that its some kind of malfunctioning rev limiter. |

Re: Keeps cuttin out...
could be a microswitch on the ignition circuit or check the grounds around the solenoid. mine acted up like that after a solenoid change and it was a loose ground.

Re: Keeps cuttin out...
main one would be an the accel pedal. it closes energizing the ignition as you press the pedal.

Re: Keeps cuttin out...
Do these things have revlimiters and so forth or just the one at the pedal?

Re: Keeps cuttin out...
it should but never really hear of them being the culprit.
