Default Belt shredding

Hi all, my 83 EZ-GO had a broken belt when I got it but since it had sat for some eight years I figured that it was probably just due to fatigue cracking. I replaced the belt last week and the cart ran fantastic but yesterday while driving the kids home from the golf course it started to bog down and the belt disintegrated without warning.
I checked it out today and it appears that the clutches are all free and working correctly which leaves me a little confused. The drive clutch seems to be pretty new (Comet), the driven shows a little wear on the sprags but everything else appears just fine. Any clues as to what to look for ?
Thanks,

Chris.

Look and see if inner surfaces of clutches are smooth. Any snag will tear a belt apart. Look for anything that might be making contact with belt. Also make sure that the clutches are not out of line. Sometimes one will spool up and other won't engage. This can cause uneven pressure on belt also.
Double check part number on belt...wrong parts cause problems also.
Just throwin'em out there

I've never shredded a belt...'76-'87 belts are all the same...45" OD x 1-3/16" wide...PN 14153G1- Verify that number with your dealer before ordering one!
I guess anything that could snag it. I've had sticks break my mower belts?
Good Luck.

Just an update here folks, I just took a stroll over to the golf course where the cart currently resides and had a chat with the head mechanic, He checked the clutches for wear etc and found nothing out of the ordinary but did say that in his 40+ years of working on these puppies he has yet to see a belt snapped in this fashion. According to him, the usual symptoms of worn clutches and belts are mostly a slipping condition / no drive situation.
The belt I fitted (from the dealer) is part No 10977, whereas as someone here pointed out and the on-line stores seem to confirm, it should be part No 14153G1. Any clue as to what belt I was given ? Maybe a different manufacturer ? The old boy at the club thinks maybe the belt was defective, any thoughts will be much appreciated.

This is what I dug up. The belt that you have, is a part number from cart parts or Nivel co. The book corresponds with the OEM part number. 10977 is supposed to be 14153G1.
That looks correct. The '88 model uses a 1/2" longer belt than 76-87. Is it possible your cart is an '88 model? 3's and 8's are very similar??
If not, I can only assume that the belt was defective.
