Low speed workhorse sputter
My 03' workhorse has a low RPM sputter. Running on jack stands with the breather tube removed I can see it pop back through the carb every 4 or 5 seconds while holding steady throttle. Any suggestions for diagnosis?? As always thanks for any advise you guys can offer. I should add the engine has a little blow by from the crank case vent but nothing sevier.
BGW has paid off for me. Ordered tires and a cable from one of the sponsors and got my discount. Thanks BGW! |

Re: Low speed workhorse sputter
Mo, from what I understand the valves on these EZGO engines need to be tickled semi-regularly. I was told by one of the members, when the carts still run bad and you have changed the plugs and all the rest of the little things, try the adjusting the valves. I can relate to that because the Shovelhead does the same thing when she wants some attention. A little valve adjustment almost always helps her smooth on out.
Good Luck http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ezgo-...djustment.html |

Re: Low speed workhorse sputter
Boris, that is exactly where i was going if no one came with a better suggestion. Thanks, now i can proceed without that nagging feeling I'm waisting time. Does anyone have lash spec for the Robin 350?? Boy, I sure could use a manual - I think I've said that before!!!. My wife is going to take some pics when I get it out of her parking space. It's nothing but a stocker but it has heritage. This was the grounds crew vehicle at Finley stadium in Chattanooga Tn. It has a big blue NCAA decal on the roof.

Re: Low speed workhorse sputter
Click on the blue "valve adjustment" that boris noted on his post. It will take you to the instructions. There are manuals in the ezgo gas tech section of the home page. The spec you want is .004mm. A quarter turn from the valve will usually get .004-.005mm.http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ezgo-gas-tech/ Look under "need a manual, diagram or ID...." We got it all!

Re: Low speed workhorse sputter
also check your cables for binding. most cables rust internally and cause all kinds of driveability problems. Turn key off and look at throttle on carb while pushing cable down. Does the carb shut all the way? Does the carb open all the way? I woudl try this after you adj the valves.

Re: Low speed workhorse sputter
Thanks courtesy, I have adjusted valves and ordered a new cable. The old one was damaged. It got pinched between the skid plate and engine. I ran it after the valves and operated throttle manually. Still popping through carb. May even be worse. I am going to set the valves again to see if it changes anything. Thanks to all for the advise.

Re: Low speed workhorse sputter
The valves are a bit tricky. I used a feeler guage on mine and caught hell getting it right. I then used the old 1/4 out from touching the valve stem and bingo it worked like a champ. I think I checked it and it was around .006 using that method. btw hows the compression?

Re: Low speed workhorse sputter
Boy I'm glad to hear that. I have been adjusting valves most of my life and don't think I have ever had to do it twice. I will go the 1/4 turn method this time. Not sure of the compression yet, I need a different plug adapter for my gauge to check it. But I am very interested to know. I am scared there may be a burnt valve.
