Clutch replacement dilema...help!

OK, I read the thread "shorter belts and 28 degree driven clutch" and went with the shorter belt for starters. Now I have discovered that the original 36 degree clutch is shot and has to be replaced. Since I have to spend the bucks on a new clutch now, which is best for the 1200 XL workhorse. Staying with the 36 degree and the shorter belt or going with the 28 and original belt? The thread seemed to "argue with itself" as there were so many opinions. Mike or Ruready, or anyone with this experience, what do you think? Again thanks for all the help this forum has provided me so far. Pretty soon I'll have a brand new 03' workhorse!!!

I have a 99 workhorse. If you run stock tires and don't carry loads the 36 would work. the 28 would be better for pulling and hills, regardless. If you run or plan to run larger tires you will need the 28 degree. period.
If your existing clutch is repairable it can be converted to a 28 deg for about 75.00. The conversion parts are usually the bad parts! There are 3 ramp buttons and a cam. Sometimes the spring is broke.

I tried every combo on my workhorse. the 28 machined for a lower gear and stock belt works best .... of course the extra low end torque will cost a couple of mph at the top end.... Depends on what type of driving you are going to be doing most?
It is easy to slow down 2-3 mph on a straight away but, it's real hard to push a golf cart up a hill

Thanks Tonyton, I did just install a lift kit and 23" tires and have some hilly areas as well as use the critter to haul loads. The cam and buttons are history. The buttons are completely eroded away and the cam is scored badly on the ramps. The spring is OK and the sheaves look to be unharmed. Will replacing the cam and buttons do the job?

I've never put a 36 degree clutch on a cart. I always replace with a 28 degree if it had a 36. Never been a short belt advocate - I am a fresh clutch advocate, though. I don't think you save enough cash to rebuild a driven clutch, when comparing a new one. But this is my opinion.

Good clutches and a good motor will pull most any hill, which is why I've not done any experimenting with short belts

Makes sense Mike. How much is a replacement 28 clutch complete?

Those ramp buttons had screws holding them in. If they are there and removable you only need the buttons, screws, and the cam.

Thanks yet again Tonyton! I have removed the buttons and screws and all else looks well. I'll try replacing those first.

My shop ezgo site has them for $279.00. As I said before - many guys here have had success with rebuilding them. I've never done that, but it sounds by your description that there may be more damage? Just personal preference - We replace them with new
