350 engine loud wine after rebuild
I finished rebuilding a 350 robin in a workhorse and I have a loud wine.
I had the crank rebuilt and replaced the rods as well as the usual rebuild stuff. It runs fine but has a loud wine type sound from behind the flywheel. I listend with my stetascope and it is coming from behind the oil pump access plate. I dont think its the pump but maybe the counter balancer gear....... I hate to start shotgunning it with parts........Does anyone have ideas......?? |

If you have a whine that changes pitch with RPM check the external rotating parts first for wear marks or grooves from rubbing.
If nothing then it sounds like a trip back inside! (sucks though) |

Probably a bearing or gear on the balancer shaft. You can pinpoint it with the stethescope and if it sounds like a gear it's probably a gear. There are some alignment shims that could be a little off. That would set the gears off track and produce noise. I doubt the gear is bad, yet.

Re: 350 engine loud wine after rebuild
When I have looked at the parts list it looks like there is a spring at the end of the counterbalancer. I am not sure that was on mine. Does anyone know?

Re: 350 engine loud wine after rebuild
If you take a dowel rod, or a metal solid rod, and a piece of hose, something
the dowel rod will push up into..and you can use that contraption to hear your engine a little better. You put the rod against the motor when it's running, and the hose up to your ear. It's a poor man's stethoscope. I have a 400 dollar Littman, and I like the homemade one better. |
