Default Where to start on 295 engine

Hi guys I just bought a (94?) EZGO Marathon that runs, but seems to have serious motor issues. It has the 295 4 stroke engine. A little background on what the symptoms are.

Oil/Gas in the carb and airfilter (could be due to overfilled oil and valves in need of adjustment)
Exhaust blowback through carb (valves out of adjustment)
No power on the slightest of hills (valves out of adjustment or low compression)
8mph top speed (valves out of adjustment or low compression)
Smokes like a steam locomotive (Oil overfilled or low compression)

I have been doing some research on here and I have come up with a list of things I need to check to see if its worn out or just out of adjustment. Those things are:

Check and set valve lash to .004
Check timing and inspect/replace belt
Inspect/replace plugs
Inspect/replace fuel filter
Drain oil and inspect/replace O-ring and filter
Refil with 1.5q of 10w30
Check compression, Should be >160

Is there anything else I should check while im in the motor?

Thanks for all your help.

Joey

looks like you got a good plan for starters. if it works out you'll need to drive it a bunch so the oil can burn out of the muffler.

I would plan on a rebuild since you have to buy the entire gasket set
anyway.. You may not have too, but I would plan on it.

I have always had bad luck with just doing the top or bottom end of a motor.

If it was me, I would do a thorough clean up as far as the oil levels
and and such.. drain completely, clean the air ducts as best as possible, pop
the rocker arm cover and set the valves and check your compression, etc..
and see how it runs.

Your speed may not be totally related to the engine power, but may be the
governor set up. I really enjoyed doing mine, and it has been running very good.

Welcome !

I have already tried screwing the govenor on the rear axle all the way in with no difference in speed. Is there another governor I should be checking or is that it?

There is just the one adjustment, if it's turned all the way in it should be wide open..

Ok pulled the valve cover and adjusted the valves, When I went to pull the plug wires the passenger side one came completely off the coil! CRAP!!
So can this be fixed or am I looking at a new coil?
PS its a 92 not a 94

I wouldn't think so. I guess it depends on if you can get it to stop smoking.

I cleaned a muffler that was oil soaked by: removeing, filling with mineral spirits, shake it, empty, and repeat (several times). It cleaned up very nicely and only took 1 hot cycle to completely burn out the mineral spirits. Compression sounds fine to me. My 350 has numbers lower than that and still runs pretty good. Good luck on the coil wire - no advise there!

Ok its running again, after I adjusted the valves, Got the coil wire rigged and im getting a good spark and the fuel pump had lost its prime. It is running better now but still not alot of power going up hills. It runs like a scalded dog on down grades, but the motor seems to Bog down going up the slightest of hills. Check timing next?
