clutch

I have an 83 Marathon, lifted with stock motor and the drive clutch seems to be slipping. I thought it was the belt but it will rev to about 50% rpm and won't move if you have any pressure on the brake. The belt is not slipping. Are these rebuildable??

On a steep incline it will stop moving and engine will rev. I'm sure it's not the belt.

The whole clutch stops moving? I think thats not possible unless its slipping on the engine shaft. Is it still bolted to the engine? They use to rebuild those all the time but ezgo no longer sells parts to do that and now your suppose to buy a new one instead. is it rattling or making any noise?

Guess I wasn't paying attn. The clutch is turning but will not enguage until it is revved up a lot then it slams shut and jerks. Does it need cleaned or what. I built my offroad buggie from scratch but have never been into a drive clutch. Bought a new one when I built the other cart so any info will help. thanks.

Yes, I would say it needs cleaned, maybe dry lube....lots of people say not to use lube (grease) on these because it attracts dirt. The way I think I see no reason not to if it makes it work, if you can make it work for another 6 months vs buying a new one I see no reason you shouldn't. Not making any noise or rattling is a good sign, a good cleaning and polishing may get it back into operating condition.

Jon, I have never had one apart. Is there a trick such as clocking the spring or something??

Nope, no tricks! Since it is made to operate in both directions, you don't have to preload the spring in and specific direction. Here is a picture of the inside of my 77's old drive clutch. There are 3 bolts that hold the cover on and this is all there is to it!

Brake cleaner and an air hose will clean it up nicely. Maybe powdered graphite would work well as a lubricant, as Jon mentioned.
