Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
I have two carts that my grandpa left in my garage to take a look at. here is what is going on:
It is a EZ-Go workhorse 1200. When you press the gas (In forward or reverse) the cart will rev up but will not move. So i took the dump bed off ( Manual ) Took a look at it and pressed the gas. The belt does not move. It has some slack in it but not a bunch. There is a ball on the end of the shaft that moves in and out. I think the belt rides between this ball and the other piece of metal. I can move the ball in with my hands. Is this some kind of spring loaded clutch that is spose to move in and put tension on the belt the more throttle you give the cart? Any ideas on what i can do to fix it? I will take pictures and a video today if that would help. My second cart is an electric so i will get to that one later and in another section. I think it just has a shorted battery. Thanks for all the help. Looks like a great forum. |

Re: Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
Welcome to BGW!!! HAPPY EASTER !!!
Ball? What ball? Pics would help this question make sense ... Drive clutch is on the engine. Driven clutch is on the transaxle. |

Re: Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
Thanks for the fast reply. I will try to get some pictures of it. The ball i am talking about looks like the black piece in your picture. except mine is metal and has about 4 or 5 bolts on the side. When i press the gas the belt goes between the ball and the metal piece but does not grip on to the shaft. From what i can figure it is designed to only grip on the sides of the belt between the metal and what that black piece is in your picture. I might be wrong. maybe the belt does grip on the shaft and mine is just out of adjustment.

Re: Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
It is a centrifugal clutch ... the one on the motor closes when it revs higher. The one on the rear opens when it revs higher...... The belt rides on sloped shiny metal surfaces called sheaves It is not supposed to grab at low rpms or you couldn't start up...... however, it should grab ( hook up) as rpms increase

Re: Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
thanks for the heads up. After looking thru the pdf file of the manual on here ( Thanks ) it looks like what i am talking about is the driven clutch assembly. Any idea as to what to try first? From what your saying, it sounds like the rear is not opening. Even when i press the pedal to the floor the rear does nothing but the front spins the belt. It just will not grab on the back.

Re: Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
The rear is essentially a ground driven device. The belt should slip on the front but never on the rear ...... if it is slipping on the rear ...... you need a new belt

Re: Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
Or the rear is not closing all the way as it should at a stop ..... remember they work opposite

Re: Workhorse 1200 Belt slip
So the driven clutch (rear) does not turn at all when you rev it up?
Is the driven clutch closed with the gap between the sheaves a little over an inch? The picture I'm seeing if the drive clutch is working properly and the driven is not turning is a locked up rear end. If the clutches are working and the cart is not moving then you have a striped hub on one of the axles. Lift the rear of the cart up with a floor jack and look at each axle while a helper starts the cart. If you see the axle nut spinning and the wheel is not then the hub is striped. Good luck |
