EH29C Robin Engine Rod Caps
I recently purchased two older ezgo carts. One is a '92 and the other a '93. They came cheap, as they were not running. I tore down the first engine ('92) and found that it had been run out of oil, and one rod had begun to seize on the crank before the rod cap came off resulting in other catastrophic damage. The second cart ('93) was not running either and had a nasty knock when I put a battery in and turned the engine over. I've since torn it down to find the same thing.... I'm assuming this is because running these things out of oil is a fairly common occurrence?
Can anyone point me to a reasonably priced rebuild kit? I need gaskets, seals and at least one piston / rod assy - std bore. Thanks, JT |

Check the site sponsors... I think you can find plenty of help there... Ruredy and MMT have also helped me tremendously. I feel sure your thread will be read and replied to by one or both shortly..

Wow, seems you live close by. yea, it's a common problem on these engines when run low on oil. there's a engine manual in the tech section that can guide you through the rebuild. the cranks can be saved, just use muratic acid to clean off the old aluminum. mikesmotortoys can hook you up on a rebuild kit or you can get the parts through the shop ezgo site. about the only place local to get the parts is carolina golf cars up in charlotte.

Re: EH29C Robin Engine Rod Caps
People like to get on and push the foot feet..and they figure it will go like it did yesterday.
I bought one like yours.. same exact issue, still had crosshatch (factory) so I have no idea why it wasn't maintained.. it was owned by a business. Obviously, the buck got passed on the oil checking. I used ample elbow grease, emory cloth, added a piston and rod , std bore, a gasket kit. 180 bucks . Once I assembled it , checking the tolerances along the way, I turned the motor over for few minutes off power. She has been running fine ever since. Welcome ! |

Hello,
Pushing without rodbearings has the same effect as a little lack of oil. When its all open, buy bearings. On my engine they only cost € 40,-- ($ 50,--) for both rods. Than you have to find a good engineshop. I think about totally 150,-- including polishing the cranck bearing will do! See a 1/2 bearing in my album. Aluminium on steel doesn't work when hot....... You posted " just use muratic acid to clean off the old aluminum" this was on a crankshaft. Can you tell me more. Do I brush it on or do I soak the shaft in it? Tom |

haven't seen him lately, that last post was april of 2010.
If you're going that route, although I can't recall seeing muratic acid take aluminum off steel, just try a little, and then soak it. I used emery cloth strips it doesn't hurt the crankshaft, but cleans the aluminum right off. |

Thanks.
I know the thread was old but tried in any way, do you think I need to start a new thread. This is my first time working on a cart engine, have work on lawn mower engine for years, just tring to save a crank. Tom |

Re: EH29C Robin Engine Rod Caps
you could start a new thread if you wanted.
I was *the* mechanic on two different golf courses..so I have a little experience with small engines, but I get baffled all the time by lots of things.. LOL.. Well, what I did was this.. I bought a cart with a motor *just* like yours, in two cardboard boxes I have never used muratic acid on a crankshaft, they either got turned or just used emery cloth. I cut mine in 1/2'' strips about ten '' and wrapped it all the way around. By the time I was on steel, I was done, and I doubt I changed it one bit. I had to get it there, to measure it anyway. the rest of the pics are here http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/membe...s-new-toy.html I just used the manual located here : http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/ezgo-gas-tech/ and it has step by step tear down and rebuild and measurements that must be made to order your new stuff Regards I had fun with it, did it on my bench, by myself, in my spare time with my fun money and that motor is still running in my buddy's cart, even though I messed up an oil ring putting it back together.. lol.. It still ran. |

You may need to try this. "Yep, muriatic acid and a green scotchbrite pad will remove any aluminum residue. Might take a few applications and as long as you're still seeing black, you're removing aluminum." Done this today. Tom N |
