Proper RPM for '93 2-Cycle?
I bought a tiny tach and replaced a clogged muffler at the same time. WOW that muffler was clogged! The cart is running so much better. Before I had to turn the governor all the way on (loose) to get it to run right. Now the governor is all the way off (tight) and the motor would keep going smooth if something in the rear (driven clutch?) Didn't start making a crazy vibration/noise and make me lift off the gas every time. So, back to the tach...at the highest, I hit 4140 rpm. At cruising I am right about 3600. How does that sound? Too high/low? Thanks so much to everyone for all your help.
List of work done this winter: ~New muffler ~HEI conversion ~1" shorter than stock belt for better torque ~rebuilt front suspension (stock tires, no lift) ~new full size car battery ~moved air intake to golf bag area (under rear seat) with a 6x4 K&N ~new carb, fuel pump, filter, linkages, throttle cable, choke cable, belts ~redid and rerouted most wiring ~rear clutch power spring ~removed oil tank and started mixing oil at about 100:1 ~new Autolite 275 plug and wire |

Re: Proper RPM for '93 2-Cycle?
The vibrating / noise that causes you to lift up off the gas is probably the governor. These carts are only supposed to go about 14 miles per hour (I believe). When the driven clutch opens up so far, it hits the gov lever and pulls the throttle butterfly closed to control the car's speed.
As far as safe RPM's, I am not really sure an exact number. I go by how the engine sounds. If the engine is producing a over-revving noise you know you are going too fast. The tone of the engine will change, it is very noticeable. High frequency vibrations start to occur as well. Also, good call on ditching the auto-oiler, pre-mix is much more reliable. Impressive list of work you got there! Got any pictures of your ride? |

I will have to play with the governor some more and see if that is what's kicking in. I am going to GPS it this weekend for speed too. Here are some pics...

Re: Proper RPM for '93 2-Cycle?
I had some time to mess around this weekend. I GPSed the cart, and it ran up to 18 mph. So I decided to take the air/fuel screw in a half turn from stock since I was putting more air in with the K&N. It liked more fuel but I still top out at 18mph. I am convinced it is the governor. I have it as tight as it will go, any other ideas for more speed? How much more would a taller tire get me?
Thanks. |

Re: Proper RPM for '93 2-Cycle?
3100 huh? I guess I am asking for trouble. Don't want it, but it is just so fun to keep asking for it. Time will tell if it finds me or not.
So, how about the taller tire idea? I have some fairly low profile/wide stock tires on it now. A cart place down the street from me sells a slightly taller (<2" taller) steel wheel and tire combo for stock height carts. Is it worth the $ or do I admit defeat? What kind of speed increase might I see? I know I will lose a little torque, no big deal. The shorter belt took care of that. Thanks for any input you guys have, your knowledge is always appreciated. |

Re: Proper RPM for '93 2-Cycle?
This is from an older post of mine...
"I just contacted Gates belts directly and they were very helpful but had nothing. However Dayco has a Dimensional Belt Search Engine. http://accessdayco.com/dimensional-lookup I put my dimensions in and it found the belt I need. Dayco HP2015 ( 39.766 x 1.188 ) and the stock recommended belt for the 90's 2-Cycles is HP2013 ( 40.75 x 1.188 ) I just ordered it from Autozone for $30, lets hope this makes a difference! I hope Dayco's belt look-up and this info helps somebody else!" |
