Default Dies on a hill

Got around to removing carb this weekend and doing a full dissassemble and clean. Adjusted linkage and low speed screw to where it runs great except on a steady incline in our neighborhood. It will just die. Wait a few seconds and it will start up and run again. My question is about the small tube sticking up from the top of the carb. It is about the size of the tube on a weedeater that the fuel line goes to. Anyway,it didn't have anything hooked to it so I capped it off with a small rubber cap. Is this some kind of relieve to the bowl? Should it have anything hooked to it? Seems like a good place for crud to get in the bowl if it is just left unplugged.

1MT,

I think that is the vent tube for the carb. If it is capped, no vent and fuel wont flow correctly. Pull the cap and see if it gets better. If so, hook the tube back up and put some screen on the end to keep the crud out.

The PO of mine had already removed the oil injection. Could this be where the oil line was hooked?

It is most likely where the oil injection went into the carb. I would start with a compression check of the engine.

the strange thing is it was running fine (except for the backfire on decelleration) before I tuned it and cleaned out the carb. Someone has modified the gov adjustment shaft and I can't get any adjustment out of it. They took the spacer tube off from under the nut, ran the nut down and cut the extra off the shaft. So now if I turn the nut, nothing happens with the spring the gov shaft just turns.

There should be a vinyl hose hooked up to it, that is is the vent for the fuel bowl. The hose wil go up then make a 180 degree loop down through a hole in the bracket next to the carb. (probably six inches total). Is there a spring between the cable stop and the throttle lever?

there is one on the gov bracket like in the tech folder picture #1 where the cable hooks to the slide shaft. It doesn't do anything now the way the previous owner rigged it up. If I adjust the nut on the shaft, it will make the cable shorter or longer but does not affect the spring.

our 89 does not have a vent on the carb. it does have an oil injection threaded hole in the manifold between carb and engine. this should be
plugged with a small metric bolt if you are not using the oil injector.
there was a small banjo outlet there originally. jim

i may stand corrected on this. in the pic. there is a small upright something that could be a vent. also note the small bolt in manifold where the oiler hose went. jim

GTM

thanks for the info. It was the cap I put on the vent tube causing it to die. Removed it and went for a stroll and it did fine. Love these forums.
