86 ezgo gas startup problem
hi i have an 1986 ezgo i bought and i've had nothing but problems with it, i've fixed most of the problems but now it will start up no problem when cold but then i'll run it around get it hot and then park and it will not start back up.
It will crank over no problem, it has perfect spark, 120psi of compression, does not really have alot of power when running, i can smell gas when it turns over, fuel is not old, mixture is correct, wondering if it is the crank seals? thanks jake |

Re: 86 ezgo gas startup problem
With compression this high I doubt the crank seals are your prob.. A bad seal on the case would decrease your comp. numbers. I am not the best on these two strokes but you might try this on for size. I have heard of alot of these 2 smokers having a stopped up muffler. Runs great cold, but when the muffler heats up and the sludge deposits from the gas mix becomes sludge it restricts exhaust flow. This results in a motor that can't breathe properly. Do a thread search on BBQ Muffler and do some reading to see if that matches your symptoms. If so follow the threads on BBQ'n your muffler. Hope this helps.. Good Luck!!

Re: 86 ezgo gas startup problem
Well, with good comp. which you have, you can rule out seals. You said the fuel flow is fine, so out with that. The only other possibilities are spark or ground related. When the problem presents itself again, check the spark to see if it's still sparkin...

Re: 86 ezgo gas startup problem
So it always starts from cold but will not start when hot and you smell gas. I would suspect that you have a carb problem causing it to run rich. When the engine is cold it doesn't matter that it is rich but when it is hot it is flooding and preventing a start. I bet that you never need to use the choke when cold. I wave my mystic wand and diagnose that the float in the bowl is punctured or stuck down. Remove the carb, clean the bowl, check the float and you will be fixed.

Re: 86 ezgo gas startup problem
I have a ezgo with a 18hp honda. Mine would run off and on again. I thought it was a carb issue or bad gas. cleaned carb... changed out gas.... no better. I changed out the fuel pump (even though it looked good). no better. I took it to a equipment rental shop that deals with honda engines. i had a pin hole leak in the vacume line. They replaced the 6-8 inches of hose and all is good now.
the odd thing is before the fix the problem was not consistant. I have put about 50 hours on the cart since the fix - all is good. good luck |

Re: 86 ezgo gas startup problem
If the cart won't start on ether when hot after it quits, you have lost compression or you have lost spark. Possibly loss of spark due to another component in the iginition system. You might do a connection and ground check just to rule that out. Be real picky, bad grounds are sure to let you down.

Re: 86 ezgo gas startup problem
Just to clarify, cold start is fine but low power.
After running awhile and stopping, it will crank over just fine, has good compression, the carb is fresh, there is plenty of spark but no fire even with ether. Something is messed up, you have all three components for successful combustion on a simple engine but no go. Have you checked the muffler to see if it plugged after it is hot? (per ez go go) |
