Question 04 TXT Clutch Damage

Hello all, first post for me.... Great site with tons of info however I didn't find any material on the actual driving clutch and what is inside and how rto take it apart or repair, I just got an 04 TXT Gas and the previous owner must have got it up on a rock or something... There is a black case or cover on the outer side of the clutch. It appears it is just a metal cover but in any case it was dented in and badly damaged all the way around as in it was spinning and hit something hard... I will try to post a pick but is this just a cover? Can I take it off and get another? It does seem like it misshaped it enough that it keeps the clutch compressed in about a 1/16 or so, making the starter motor move the cart when you hit the pedal even before the engine starts... Im guessing it is not supposed to move until the engine starts and it picks up more rpm right???

Sounds like you are right...... can you post a pic of the damage?

Not much posted about the stock drive clutches because they are nearly indestructible and last about 5,000 hours then throw them away and get a new one.....

I got one thats dented to, but the other way around. I had almost full gas when the clutch kicked in, but then it was hard to kill. I tried to fix the cover, making it more round, but there was also trouble with the internal springs. Hard to get, and very expensive!

I think a new one is a good idea

Thanks. I took it appart last night and hammered the dents out all the way arround. I was a bit concearned with the spring inside and its position but it looks like it can only go in one spot as there was only one hole for each end... I got it back togeather and the clutch can now fully disengage. There is no longer a pull on the transmission when you start the cart... I do notice a quick engagement on the clutch however. Is there an adjustment for this? I open the throttle slowly but then all of a sudden the clutch snaps tight on the belt and you get a bit of whiplash....

I'm gonna look in the specs. when i get home. Sounds like somethings very loose, and keeps from holding back on the clutch. I'm thinking internal springs here. But i'm gonna look and see if there is any way to adjust it.

There is no binding or freeplay in the spring. It moves in and out very smooth by hand. Is there supposed to be any rotational winding in tension on the spring prior to bolting the clutch back up?

The specs. says nothing about that part of the clutch. I'll have to look at one of mine to find out. Give me a few days!

Question.? Does the clutch move smoothly without any tension?
Can you move the clutch by hand without resistance, or close to
zero resistance?

I can push the outter sheave? in against the belt with no resistance other then the normal spring tension. No binding at all. It is smoooth... When the black outer cover was on and it was dented all to.... it prevented the outer sheave from coming all the way back and in turn allowed the 3 weights inside to be in a closer state of reacting to the centrigual force. It was smooth like this. Now that I hammered all the dents back out and the guard is back in place it seems that the sheave is all the way out at full stop and the weights ar almost too far out that they require more RPM to get them over that hump and once they are over wham.... kind of like the let off on a compound bow but opposite... hard to explain.

Ok.... Hmmmm strange...
Well the easy thing... new clutch.
but
the mekanic inside wonders why, it does not work when there's nothing to prevent the the clutch from working.

I going to tear one of mine clutches apart....

Give me a few days, or better.... Monday!
