Default 4 stroke HEI Conversion

Per the thread in the Gas Tech section this HEI conversion is for a 2 stroke...will it work for a 4 stroke as well?

I'm in the process of doing that right now.

I've got some carb issues still plaguing me; so I've been hesitant to shout "success" from the rooftops until I get all the bugs out.

I'm running a GM 4 wire HEI module with an ignition coil from a 3100 GM engine. (very common coil)like this
Connecting the primary terminals on the coil is a bit tricky since they're on the bottom of the coil, close proximity to the mounting/grounding hole, and narrow terminal width. I was just using what was available for free.

For some reason, it likes the pickup coil (trigger) leads reversed.

The EZGO coil has considerably more primary resistance than an auto coil, so YMMV with the stock coil.

Yes guys it will work the same for the 4 stroke. Some of the wire colors aren't the same but I wired mine like the schmatic and she fired right up!!!

Just a little hint on the conversion from experience - make SURE you mount the HEI module tightly to bare metal, both for grounding purposes and for heatsinking - these modules run HOT and will fail if not properly seated against something to wick that heat away!

Yea I mounted mine to the same plate that the ignitor was mounted to. I just ground off the paint and bolted it on. I bought my HEI from Advance Auto and it came with a little pack of clear grease. They told me to smear the grease on the back before bolting it on. Good luck!!!

That's the HEI Module I used, it works amazingly well however one note is that before you install it, it has a small plastic post on the back to aid with alignment when used in a regular vehicle that will have to be nipped off (to allow the module to be mounted flat against whatever surface you're mounting it to). Seems to run a bit cooler than the factory HEI's too, which is a good thing

Excuse me for asking this, but, what is the advantage of doing this. If its helping build rpms faster, im all for doing it

Well, in all honesty, the original reason people started using HEI's was due to the factory ignitors being WAAAY overpriced, then that quickly moved along to using them because the factory Ignitors were completely unavailable ...

The bonus to them are a stronger, hotter spark when used in conjunction with a high-output coil (more efficient combustion, I would assume is what gives the slightly better performance) - also, in my opinion, I would think the reliability factor and longevity of them should be higher/better than a similar part designed for a cart, mainly as the HEI's are designed for a much heavier duty-cycle so therefore should last longer being as we are running them far below their design threshold (again, THAT's just speculative).

Bottom line, my HEI made a VERY noticeable difference with starting, and a perceptible difference in accelleration - for $40 (HEI and Coil) I would say I'm VERY happy.
