Generator Rebuild?

I have a 98 EZGO ST 350 that is not charging. I have performed the check procedures and it appears that the generator is not generating although it will start. I replace the regulator last summer and have checked the electrical connections.

I can't seem to find any threads that discuss problems with generators only or rebuild discussions.

Should I just pick up some new brushes and replace them?.... anybody had a similar issue or have a better idea?

If you have verified that it is a generator; not a VR, or bad ground strap problem, then yes I would get brushes for the generator.

I put Brushes in the generator but still no generation although it will start and run. I guess I should plan on pulling it apart further?

Any other ideas?

I just had mine done for this exact problem. It was a new Starter/Gen. What happened was one of the posts (the one with the wire to the VR) was over tightened and it spun the small wire off inside. It was starting fine and the brushes were fine. Search my old treads trying to diagnose the problem. Sounds like yours.

Did you try cleaning all your connections? Mine was not charging i loosened all connections and cleaned them. Now mine is charging normal.

We get lazy and check is it tight, but thats not clean.
check the negative path, its like plumbing what goes
in must get out. good luck.

check the closed contact in the ignition switch. The charge circuit runs through it. Contact opens when you start. And close again when you let the key go. They may not be closing.

make sure the green wire is connected at the start/gen and vr. Just b/c your vr is new less than a year does not mean it isn't bad. I have seen bad new ones right out of the box.

Thanks for the replys, I will check out the above I'm pretty sure the connections are clean and tight but....

Well I pulled the Starter/Generator apart hoping to find a broken wire or something but still no real luck.

I checked it for opens and grounds as the manual suggest but still NTF.

I spun it on the bench with an impact and could only get about .5v out of it.

Any other ideas or is it just a bad generator some how..
