Default Robins 295cc Oil Leak and Engine Issue

Hello all, I recently purchased a 1996 GXT500 Ez Go utility cart. I had to replace the fuel pump, fuel filter, plugs, and micro switch. After that I was off and running... sort of.

My Problems:
1. When I give the cart gas either in neutral or in gear it begins to blow oil from the head pretty badly. I have done some research here and think that the PO may have replaced the head gasket but left out the oil pump O ring. I attached a picture describing where the oil is coming from. Is this the oil pump, and is it the missing O ring or something else?

2. Performance; sometimes when I give it gas it will be VERY sluggish and just crawl. If I feather the gas pedal it eventually kicks in with power and starts moving. Once I am moving it sounds like it is missing or something. It has a rhythm to the engine where it will consistently cycle through clean then miss, clean then miss... The rhythm is about ever 2 or 3 seconds. I'm not sure if this makes sense or if I am explaining it properly. Any help on troubleshooting this is appreciated as well.

THANKS!

It appears somebody used silicone instead of a valve cover gasket or maybe added silicone to the gasket and it is not sealing all the way(?).As for as the miss it could be dirty carburetor,bad/old fuel, valve adjustment or spark pugs.Have you done a compression check yet and checked the valve adjustment?

No on the compression or valves but I will do that next. The PO said that he cleaned the carb but I will pull it this weekend and double check. The silicon looks very fresh. I plan on pulling the head and replacing the gasket but some threads here made me a little nervous that I may be missing an O ring

Can you pull the spark plugs and post color pics of the tips? Sounds like one is not firing

Yes, will do tonight. Should be easy to see since they were put in yesterday and only run around the block.

That's not the oil pump it's the cam/valve cover and a closed system that vents through a hose from the crankcase to the air filter. The cover takes an O ring, no gasket or silicone required.

So the valve cover gasket is technically referred to as an O ring?

From Wikipedia,
An O-ring, also known as a packing, or a toric joint, is a mechanical gasket in the shape of a torus; it is a loop of elastomer with a disc-shaped cross-section, designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface.

Sorry.. guess it is a gasket, I just always considered a gasket as a flat type. Where this is an O ring that fits in a groove in the cover and in the head.

I agree with you StoveBolt,I always think of a gasket as flat and I wasn't trying to be a smarty with my post because I've never even thought about them actually being an O Ring.
