8:1 Gears With High Torque Clutch?
Hey, Everyone who sells the high speed gears says " you will lose torque to pull up hills ". But what would happen if you installed a high torque clutch along with high speed gears? Would you have more torque when trying to pull up a hill than without the high torque clutch, I mean I know you wouldn't have the same torque as a cart with stock gears with a high torque clutch, but wouldn't it help some? I want to install the 8:1 gears , but still want to climb a small hill. Thanks, Scott

I'm not sure what the ratio is in a 96 ezgo freedom but i put a 28 degree clutch on it and it pulls big hills fine even with 23x11x12's. should work just fine good luck

There's also always the shorter belt trick to increase torque (installing a drive belt that's between 3/4 and 7/8 shorter than stock) ... Adds quite a noticeable bit of hill-climbing and pulling ability while barely sacrificing any top end - add that to speed gears and you just might get the result you're looking for without spending a boatload on a new clutch (the belts run around $35)

Re: 8:1 Gears With High Torque Clutch?
Then again, I just sorta did the math and came up with 'Higher speed + less torque" added to "Higher torque + less speed" and pretty much ended up back where I started (minus, of course, some money) ...

You can get the 28 degree clutch ramp only, put it on your sheeves and presto a 28 degree clutch for under $75. as for the hi speed low torque prognosis i love my hi speed gears and low torque clutch runs 30 mph and pulls hills great!

Re: 8:1 Gears With High Torque Clutch?
The bottom line is that you only have a certain amount of horsepower and no matter what you do with that hp that is all you have got. You will have to compromise some speed to gain more grunt. For me fitting the shorter belt was a great deal as the larger tires had crucified my torque and thus hill climbing ability. You can change your gear ratio and your clutch and your belt but you will never get 30 mph AND climb Everest unless you change your engine. Decide what is important for you and go for it.
