Question 89 Marathon belt replacement

Did some research based on my original belt part # (Dayco 22337-G1) which is replaced by (Dayco HP 2012) measures 41"X1 3/16". Much shorter than the 45"X1 1/16" everybody else seems to have on a stock 2 cycle cart.

My question is: how much shorter than stock do I need to look for to get more bottom end torque and still be able to install it and have it run right? I found one that is the same width and 1/2" shorter (Dayco 2021). Would that be short enough?

I know that the '87-down Dayco replacement that everyone seems to be using (and I helped a friend put on his cart with really nice results) is 7/8" shorter than stock, if that helps ... Let me know if you find one, as my '88 has the same stock belt as yours and that mod is in the pipeline for the winter. Thanks!

1 inch shorter is the rule of thumb here. any shorter than that and you will have trouble betting it on & shifting...

Things changed in 1988 and the belt got shorter. For me getting a 7/8 ths shorter belt on was a little tight but it did roll on with a bit of a grunt. I would guess that a 1 inch shorter would work without an issue. The other thing I found was that when the belt was new it was tight enough to move the cart when the starter alone was cranking. I was very concerned about this at first as didn't think that the load of the cart (plus my lardy old a$$) would be good for the starter, however after a few hours of running it all loosened up fine.

BTW Brew City, when you come to do yours give me a call I just know that you will need some manly fingers on the case

Will do...I just ordered the 1/2" shorter belt because I didn't see one 7/8" shorter. I'll let you know the outcome once I get it and put it on.

well got the belt from UPS today...went out and installed in about 5 minutes. Once I figured out how to open both clutches at the same time it was a breeze. It does seem to have more starting power and starts moving much quicker without the delay time. However, my old belt was so worn and dry that it didn't have much grip. the new one sure does.

I have noticed that while coasting down hill now no matter how fast or slow you are going, when the engine cuts out it doesn't coast very well like it did with the old belt. It will sort of grap on and off. If you let your foot off the gas to come to a full stop without using the brakes, it will stay engaged longer sounding sort of like an engine brake on a semi. I guess I'll have to relearn how to drive it unless the new belt eases up a bit.

Is your a 3pg? My 1990 takes a Gates 6098 and works good so far and I was able to get it on no problem.
