problem starting
ok so i posted somehtin similar to this befor but the answer i got didnt help. when i hit the gas on my cart it whines but doesnt turn over and the clutch rotates back and forth. i sprayed the carb with starting fluid and it does not get it to turn over so i dont think its a bad carb seal. i did nothice though that the starter pullie spins but does not turn the belt. i sanded the pullies and the belt did not seem to be stretched or hardend. also sometimes when it whines if i let off the gas and switch it to the opposit gear im in it turns over right away.( sometimes it sticks in the gear it was in the originally.) any idead on how to fix this ?

Re: problem starting
If the starter is spinning and the engine is not turning over, the belt is loose
or worn to thin to catch on the sides of the pulley |

Re: problem starting
Easy explanation. When you finish with the engine it continues to rotate until it hits the compression stroke when it comes to rest. Now if your belt is slipping as it certainly is, when you try to start the starter motor is immediately confronted by the compression of the engine which makes the belt slip. Now you put it in the opposite gear and the engine spins in the other direction. The piston travels down, gaining momentum, then up towards the compression cycle. This time the engine has gained enough inertia to overcome the compression and away you go.
As DOOmsman says get yourself a new belt. No need to get a cart belt take your old one into NAPA or Autozone and they will measure it and fit you up. |
