Yep, it is a 1984 marathon with a Robin 2PG 247cc 2 stroke engine. So what do you plan to do to it?

That is fine, its your cart and your money, however if this is your first project you should look through this forum for the pitfalls in your plan. First of all, without some serious investment in your back axle you will end up with no reverse gear. Many people will tell you that a rebuilt and well running 2PG engine is quite acceptable and will be considerably cheaper than what you are thinking of doing.

Re: 1984 ez model ? how do I tell
Also, for what it's worth, 5" is pretty much "up against the wall" lift-wise on these older Marathons without significantly increasing the cost and headaches involved in the process ... A tight 2PG is a great little motor, it'll pull you around quite well (mine has a 5" lift with 22's and will easily top 20mph with 2 riders on flat ground) and there are still other inexpensive mods if you want more torque for hill climbing, etc - heck, even a total top-end rebuild with new cylinder and everything is under $200, you'd easily spend double that or more just in parts, etc to do the conversion (not to mention you'd still be in need of an engine) ... Dave as always has some good advice here, in my opinion!

Re: 1984 ez model ? how do I tell
Surely, it is just a simple motor so any qualified shop can do it. Are you sure it is shot beyond your abilities? The most common problem is corosion. If you felt so inclined you could take both ends of each cable off and clean the lug and the bolt with a wire brush and sandpaper. Tip: you must put a thin wrench under the lug on the starter to prevent the post turning or you will likely rip the wire off from the inside of the case. Then you could remove the rubber plugs and pull the brushes to see if the are worn. Might save you a few hundred $$.
