Default 1990 EZGO Marathon

Hi guys.. I'm a newbie here. I have an EZGO cart in my shop now. The serial number is 600778 and the mfg code is G2990. It has no engine or the pulley that would go on the crank. Everything else seems to be there. I always wanted one to play around with and I paid very litle for it so I have no downside.

I'm trying to figure out how the drivetrain actually works. How does it change direction? Do I have one of those two stroke models that reverses the crank direction to back up? I usually work on older vehicles and vintage garden tractors. Never tinkered with one of these things before.

The engine actually spins in reverse to move the car backwards and spins the other direction to go forward, there is no transmission.... You must COMPLETELY STOP the engine before changing directions.

If you wanted to use a 4 cycle engine, you'd need a transmission or just lose reverse. That is the reason I haven't done it

That would explain the low price. It'll make the project a little more involved. I have various garden tractor parts in my barn and shed that I might be able to use to come up with a tranny setup. I've been backing my way out of trouble my whole life so I definitely want reverse.

The 1990 cart has the Robin 3PG engine fitted. It is important to understand that a 2PG will not fit. If you look long enough you will find one for sale. About $400 will get you a top and bottom end overhaul kit which will make your engine like new. All you need to do is make sure that the crankcase halves are not damaged and the head is good. If you rebuild it you will have a great cart with 11hp which is more than a match for the 4 stroke boys

I have the 3PG in my old cart. Much more torque than the 295CC Robin, and I don't have to adjust the valves...

I personally think it is much smoother than the 2PG.

The only thing I like better than my E-Z-GO golf cart is a Blue Bird school bus. Wrong Forum for that I guess

I don't actually have the engine though. Nor the clutch/pulley set up. I'm used to working on small engines and equipment so I'm sure I can come up with a solution. A hydrostatic tranny/pump/rear end from a garden tractor might be fun to do. I'd like to hear any ideas you guys might have.

How hard is it to find the correct engine for one of these old carts? Are there snowmobile engines that will work?

I don't think many snowmobile engines can run in reverse.... I may be wrong tho

I think that you may have to accept that you will not find a replacement 3PG. I would bite the bullet and forgo reverse gear. Now find yourself a V twin big block and get on with it. That cart is way too nice not to use.
