Running finally now clunk in rear
Now I finally have the engine running and drove the cart down the driveway and around the corner, it seems like the rear end has something wrong or needs to be checked out. Its clunking sounds like something is lose back there. I checked everything outside but im afraid its in the diff. It sat for who knows how long. What should i look for and what should i do?

Check the diff oil? Put it up on jacks and spin each wheel ?

Re: Running finally now clunk in rear
Ive also never ridden on nor drove a gas cart so im not even sure how its supposed to run and/or feel but it didnt feel bad. Kinda jerky with the acceleration and it backfired once or twice and smoked a bit but its also sat forever so i just took it as expected.

Re: Running finally now clunk in rear
Brew City Music had a problem where his engine mounts were shot and under some conditions the engine brushed the driven clutch cover. You could probably diagnose this by rocking the engine to see how much it moves.
Does your cart backfire after you back off the throttle and then put your foot down again? If it does, do you have the spring fitted on the throttle link on the carburetor? Dave |

Re: Running finally now clunk in rear
How about jack it up and pull the rear wheels out fromn the body. If they move maybe one of the wheel hub nuts are loose causing the half shaft to clonk in and out of the differential.

Re: Running finally now clunk in rear
Ok i jacked it up and pulled on the wheels on each side to see if the axle nut may be lose or something but no dice. Everything felt tight. Its only when the drive clutch engages. Its fine until it starts to move. Engine idle and everything else is fine.
It almost sounds like a big coffee can of rocks and you're rolling it. I dont think the rear end has issues because it still propels and drives it just makes noise. Whats the rear consist of on these things? Is it like a truck rear end? The more i drove it around tonight the better it was running which was expected because it sat so long. Im afraid ill have to pull the rear diff apart and have to replace all that. Unless maybe its the drive clutch something broken inside that and when it spins it rattles? |

Re: Running finally now clunk in rear
OK so how about this. Take the drive belt off and start her up. If the noise goes away it is not the drive clutch. Removing the driven clutch is a snap so you could pull it and with the cover off and when it is in your hands give it a good shaking. If it seems sound then look at the differential. I would suspect a clutch more than the rear end which should have spent its life in oil.
PS don't rev the engine too hard with the belt off, the drive clutch won't appreciate it. Dave |

I agree with Dave, take the drive belt off and start 'er up (just don't rev it up too far).
Good luck |
