Ring compressor ?

Try using a big hose clamp

I have used an aluminum can (careful, best use some nice gloves for this)
and cut the ends off, and make a thin metal cylinder..I cut it with a knife..
down one center, and the ends off, then used a older style hose clamp
if you can find one..they don't seem to be as uneven..

Good luck..been there.

If you have an advance or autozone nearby they loan ring compressor tools.
just a thought.

We use the hose-clamps on carts and bikes(Try doing both pistons on a British-Twin at the same time).They work great,you can grab the rings by the upper-edge,get the cylinder down and then slowly work the clamp down as you feed the rings in.Then just undo the clamp and remove.

Thanks guys. Will do, wish me luck. I could borrow a ring compressor tomorrow but I don't want to wait. I just got the engine cases together and am anxious to get as far as I can tonight. Thanks again.

All is well that ends well. Got her whipped with the good ole hose clamp trick. What I had failed to realize is that there is a certain location on the piston that the piston ring end gap MUST be in or they will not compress. Thanks again group. Another job well done !

all 2-strokes have pinned ring-grooves so the rings don't rotate and get the end caught in a port(Bad results follow).

Thanks Pachanga90 and others, but yeah I had thought about the end gap location in relation to the ports but I had never seen a piston ring groove with that built into it. I actually found out by accident when I couldn't get the ring(s) to compress in those areas. Sooo---- upon further inspection............... and the rest is as we say "history". I now have the motor back in and bolted up, wired in, and fuel lines run, etc. etc.. She'll be running again today and I am REAL excited to see just how much power gain I am going to have. You see, before the rebuild I only had 30lbs. compresson max ! ! ! When I took it apart the rings were literally ground into the piston. I paid $330.00 for the kit (new crankshaft w/rod, bearings,piston, rings, cylinder and all seals and gaskets). I thought that was a good deal compared to the local parts guy who wanted $510.00 for the same kit but without the new cylinder ! Thanks again to all.
