What year is my EZGO gas?

I need a little help. I found a cute little ezgo cart for $50.00 and I intend to do a ground up restoration, ( I call it FDR, fifty dollar rig)

In trying to find books, manuals drawings etc, I find that the more I know the more I'm confused.

Here is what I know.

Serial tag was mis-struck and only shows part of the number....
9f08 174362

FDR has
a 2 cycle engine w/ 6 bolt head
Verticle muffler on drivers side
Battery tray on drivers side
2 person seating
Air cleaner on passenger side
two back rest
metal body
either no top or top was seperated from it, either way, I ain't got it.
internal starter...i think
horizontal plastic fuel tank behind seat
And a ugly red paint job.
It had about a million spiders in it, now only half a million, the other half permeated my shop!!!!

My best guess is 1979 or 1989

And, if anyone know of any pitfalls before I spend $$$
Like, rebuild engine or toss it and use ,,, ???

Any help would be very very much appreciated!!

vertical muffler is 2PG, and in late 88/early 89 they went to the 3PG engine with a horizontal muffler so we know it's earlier than that ... Try matching it up with the manuals and diagrams available here in the "Gas Tech" section to narrow it down

Possibly 79, def. not an 89. Like Brew said, the muffler on a 2pg "What you have" will be up and down on the drivers side. Internal starter will tell you it is pre 1980? About the extent of my brain matter!

OK, that's what threw me.
Vintage Golf stated that 1983 was the only year for the horizontal muffler. Assuming they are incorrect then this machine must be a 1979.

I went through the gas tech section, and some other sites it suggested but couldn't find any manuals that stated they covered 1979....I'll keep looking.

I have a 88 and my battery is on the passenger side and my fuel tank runs front to back on the drivers side.

With the sideways rear-mount tank,I would go with late 70's.I robbed the one for my cart from a 79 3-wheeler(sideways rear-tank).

OK fubar, just a WAG but if it is 474362 it would be Model Year: 1988 Make/Model: GX444 2-cycle Gas Marathon

It's definitely NOT an '88 - and with the internal starter, etc it's almost certainly pre-82 unless there's been a transplant ...
