Difficult start, sort of
Took my 99 gas workhorse out for a spin today because it was so nice. Probably went a mile or so, through woods and back roads. Sat for a while and when I went to start it, it did not kick right off. Had to touch the gas just a bit 4 or 5 times, kind of like when first starting in the morning. Shut it off 2 or 3 times when going to reverse or stopping to close a gate, and everything was fine. Drove about a mile or so to get home, let it sit 4 or 5 minutes, and again I had to tough the gas 3 or 4 times before it started. Also there seemed to be a little gas smell both times.
Yesterday I made basically the same trip, and made a similar trip the day before that. Neither time did it do what it did today. |

Re: Difficult start, sort of
Ok, cart sat for about 30 minutes and was again difficult to start. Stopped and started it three or four times after first start up and each of those starts were like normal. Decided to take off the air filter since there was a gassy smell when it started hard. Found gas in the filter compartment. Took some paper towels and got all the gas out that was sitting in the air filter compartment.
About this time I realized if I did anything different then the last couple days, today I added gas to the tank. I also seemed to remember something about not tightening the cap too tight, which of course I'd done. I loosened the cap just a tad, and took the cart for a long drive. Let it sit 5 minutes then went out to look at the air filter again. This time no gas in the filter compartment. Let the cart sit another 5 minutes and then tried to start it. Same as before. Have to try 4 or 5 times, or more, before it starts. Once it did start I let it run a while, then looked in the air filter compartment again. No gas in the compartment. When you have to try numerous times to get it to start, when it does start it almost sounds like it's not getting enough gas. Almost like you feel you need to pump it a bit to give it more gas. Which I don't do. |

I let the cart sit about 20 minutes. Tried to start it, gave it 2 or 3 tries. Pulled the choke out just a bit and she started right up, just as it used to. Looked in the air filter compartment and there is just a tiny amount of gas in there.

Re: Difficult start, sort of
I've messed with this off and on today. Seems that when cold, or having sat for at least 15 or 20 minutes it is hard to start. You touch the gas 4 or 5 times for sure maybe more. And when it does start it's slow to rev up, almost like it's gas starved.
Once it's up and running you can stop it for a minute or so, and will start first touch of the gas every time. Even if you just get it started after a hard prolonged start, you can let your foot off the gas, put it back on and it will start right back up, first touch. It's almost as if when sitting for a long time the gas siphons away from the carb, but when it's just off a minute or two the carb keeps it's prime. Not sure if that's the proper way to describe it, but as I said I'm mechanically challenged. Would the above description go along with the carb float level problem mentioned earlier? If so can I fix this myself with my limited mechanical skills? |

Re: Difficult start, sort of
Thought I'd update this for today.
Got home around noon and tried to start the cart. It hadn't run since last night. Second time I touched the gas it started. And like yesterday it would start every time with just one touch once it has been going. Took the cart for a couple mile drive to the river. Had to get off for gates and to change direction and started first touch each time. Parked it by my house and waited 20 or 30 minutes. Touched the gas 5 or 6 times, no start, gave it just a little choke and it started. So it doesn't seem as simple as warm engine starts, cold engine it doesn't. Last night we got down to the 30s, it was about 50 when I tried at noon and it started second touch. Actually that's probably better then normal for first time of the day starting. Any ideas? And if it is floats as suggested earlier, can anyone direct me in the proper fix. |

CHeck if your fuel pump is consistantly pumping fuel. Take the line off, check it when you say it starts right up, and when you say it gets hard to start.

Re: Difficult start, sort of
Took it for a long drive. Took the hose off the fuel pump when I got back and got gold gas flow. Put the hose back on, touched the gas, started right off.
Let it sit 30 minutes took off hose again, got good gas flow. Put the hose on and had to touch the gas 3 or 4 times before it started. Does the fuel pump hold the gas in the line up to the carb? If so could the pump work, so I get good gas flow. But the pump allows the gas to drain back towards the tank when it sits, which takes more to pump enough gas to the carb to get it to start. When off just a minute or so, there is not enough time for the gas to drain back, so it starts easily. Is that a possibility? The cart runs fine, and aside from it taking more to start it on some occasions there is no real problem. But because it's acting differently then it was a few days ago, something's going on. The air filter compartment where the carb attaches is wet and there is just a little bit of gas in it. Nothing like in the picture I posted earlier in this thread. Of course it's possible it took weeks to get as much gas in the compartment as in that picture. |

Re: Difficult start, sort of
If you start the cart after an overnight rest, the cart would start right away, correct? But let it rest for, say 5 minutes, then try to start it. Either it is difficult or won't start. Right again? Remove the fuel line connection to the carb. Be ready with a small container where you will place the end of the fuel line you removed to catch the gasoline that will spill as you start the engine. Now, start the cart. It should start (even without the fuel line attached). If that is the case, you have a float level issue.

I did notice today when I drove it for a mile. I stopped for maybe 4 or 5 minutes and I had to touch the gas 3 or 4 times. That happened twice. Later when home and letting it sit at least 20 minutes, it may take 4 or 5 or even more times for it to start. Quote:
I will try this tomorrow when I get home. Of course the next question will be. If it does start with the fuel line disconnected, now what do I do? |
