New guy with lots of problems

I'm fairly new here and with your help I've bought a new Starter/Generator for my EZ-GO and put it on but I've still got questions and other issues.

Here's the cart details. Bought used for my dad who has health issues and is not able to walk much. I figured this would be the perfect gift but has turned into a nightmare.

Manuf Code - 85L24

Anyway, here's the issues

#1 - I put the new SG on and a new belt. I wired it up like the 89 2-stroke diagram said. When I put it in forward it would go in reverse and vice versa. I found the 1981 wiring diagram on this site and swapped the A1 & A2 wires and now it runs correctly.

Looking at the wiring for the forward/reverse diamond (someone has scratched these into the metal). The A is at the very top, B is on the left, C at the bottom and D on the right. Is this right?

Secondly, I have it wired as A = F1, B = A1, C = ground & D = A2. Is this right?

Third, I ran it around the house and when I checked it when I got off the S/G was HOT!!! Is this normal? I just bought it and I don't want to burn it up first thing. Apparently this is normal.

#2 - the drive belt seems loose to me. Is it supposed to be before it gets going? With the engine off, I can grab the drive belt between the pulleys and squeeze it together and have it touch with no effort. Also, would this effect the way it pulls on hills and small inclines.

#3 - this thing has no "get up and go" to it at all. When we first got it, I took it to a man and he checked the compression and replaced the head gasket. Then we took it to another man to tune the carb. Well, this thing still has nothing. It will fly backwards when in reverse but when you go foward it's a dog. Also, going downhill it flys but once it planes out it dies. It's like it surges then dies, surges and dies. My dad is a large guy (300 lbs) and that's why I think it needs a little more. Would this be from problem #2? How do you manipulate the governor on these things to get more pep? Governor is not there so I guess that solves that.

I know this is a lot to ask but it really would help me out. I want to give this back to my dad so he can use it. He told me he didn't want to touch it because it wasn't dependable and he didn't want to get stranded because he couldn't walk back (they live on a hill). This was his Christmas present in 2009 and it just hasn't run right since. Any help would be much appreciated.

S/G getting hot doesn't sound right to me.... be patient the 2 stroke experts will be along in a little while.

That belt might need to be replaced but you should look at it after the engine is started. Not sure a new belt would solve the power problem but it might help. Look at the guides on the site for how to adjust the governer.

edit: found where you can adjust the governor. I went out and checked the cart.... the governor was removed So, I guess it's a carb tuning issue??

If your 85 carb is like my 88, there's no adjustment possible (or needed) If I'm wrong on the 85 someone else will fill you in I'm sure.

Your drive belt is definitely worn out from your description. I'd replace it. Going with a 1/2 inch to 1 inch shorter drive belt than stock will give you loads of extra torque. Again, I'm sure someone in here can give you an exact part number. Cost should run you around 35 bucks.

A "Hot" starter/generator is actually quite normal from my experience with my 88. Not hot enough to fry eggs on, but hot enough that you don't want to leave your hand laying on it for more than a couple seconds...lol Mine's been like that since I picked it up last fall and I run it about 10 miles a day and it runs better today than the day I got it (long story for another day!)

If it was me, I'd get the drive belt and install it and run it for a while to see how things shake out. You may also want to consider deleting your oil mix pump setup and run premixed oil/gas for safety and better performance (first sign of a non-functional oil injector is usually a seized engine from what I've heard!)

thanks for the info about the S/G. I'll leave it alone for now. It's just as you described. It's not egg frying hot but you definitely don't want to leave your hand on it.

I run pre-mix already. I figure it's easier that way. I'm running 50:1. Hope that's good.

Nope, too rich on the oil 128/1 is the correct mix. 1 ounce to a gallon you would be ok to about 80/1 but don't go any richer. Maybe you should look into a muffler BBQ. these things get plugged up after several years of running. Cleans the muffler out and runs almost like new

Belt numbers for Dayco belts are HP2011 stock length and HP3004 short belt hope that helps may check site sponsors.
