I'm no mechanic, but I have had a couple situations where running bad when warmed up was because of a bad coil.

It sure can. For example if your regulator has given up you may be running at 18 volts which will cause the coil to overheat an give an erratic output. Of course it could be a veritable cornucopia of other things but it might be worth putting a voltmeter across the battery and with the engine running see what volts you have.

A bit far out but the neighbors cart was doing a hit
or miss miss and the screw on cap was undone and
making sporadic contact on the plug.

That is perfect, so we need to look elsewhere.

Does it need to be choked when it is cold? If not then maybe it is running rich. Choke butterfly stuck on? air filter clogged? air passage to carburetor kinked?
What color are the spark plugs?

I'm wondering if someone can shed some light on this.I haven't worked on these but have done the same thing on automotive. When doing this wouldn't it be wise to make sure the piston is at TDC to prevent this from happening if the air comes loose. Valve would only fall and contact the piston instead of dropping in the cyl. What ya think DAVE & GUYS
