Default 2009 ST400 slipping belt on hills

I have a ST400 with 13hp kawasaki. It is stock except for 22" tires. Went riding the other day and couldn't climb a hill that I wouldn't consider too steep. The motor seems to have the power but the belt slips at low speed on hills. Any suggestions.

I had the same problem with my custom, If I came to a complete stop and crawled up the hills I was fine but at a rolling start it would slip. I pulled the driven clutch and indexed the spring for more tension (You will need the puller) I also went from the recommended HD belt to the standard and even when wet slippage is very minimal.

it sounds to me you either have a worn belt or a bad driven clutch.

remove the driven clutch (clutch on diff) and take it apart. See what the risers look like. you could be rubbing metal agains metal and if you are then the clutch isn't working properly. There is a diy on here somewhere.

The cart is like new literally. The previous owner could have abused the belt but I think the secondary clutch parts should be fine. I will inspect them when indexing the clutch spring. I saw the video IDIeselman had on you tube that was very informative. What is the strongest setting when doing that mod? I am hoping if I make the secondary tighter it will stop the slipping and give me a few more rpm before shifting.

Try a new belt - the old one may be stretched, especially if it has been slipping in the past and may have gotten a little warm...

I took off the driven clutch today. It was pretty easy took off belt, bolt in center of clutch and tapped a few times with ablock of wood and hammer and it popped right off. It looks like it is on a splined shaft but is is a taper shaft.

Anyway, the spring was indexed to the #2 position. My clutch spring compressor was too big a diameter to fit through the clutch so I put it back on. The belt looked fine to me it wasn't shiny/glazed or rough. I don't think moving to the 3rd position would have done much good.

Does anyone make a stiffer spring that can be indexed? Any suggestions other than trying a severe duty belt?

Did you measure the width of the belt?A little wear on the width makes a LOT of difference in performance,I'm not 100% sure but I think a new belt is 1 3/16" wide.
