Default 1989 ezgo smoking then quit

I resently got a 1989 ezgo lifted golf cart from my grandma as she can not use it any more. I just got the thing running from a stuck needle valve in the carb and drove it around for about a month. Then all of a sudden the thing started loosing power and smoke just started barreling out of it. Now it will not start. I think the motor burned up.

I have worked on 4 strokes for years but not any 2 strokes. So my question is what would be some of the things people would check to see what the problem is. My guess is that the oil line got pluged and burrned up the rings but I am unsure how this system works. I will be able to check the compression on it when I get home on Thursday.

It is very plausible that the oil pump died and you smoked the engine. The first test would be a compression test. Most guys disconnect the oil pump, seal the port to the inlet manifold and mix the oil with the gas manually.

If you decide to rebuild it you will need to establish if it is a 2PG or 3PG engine (1989 was the change over year). The good news is that parts are readily available for either engine.

Yeah I was looking on line and I can find parts very easy so this is not a problem I was planning on rebuilding the engine since I know it was well abused. I just did not want to do so and find out I smoked the rebuilt one. Is there a way to test the oil pump I am unsure on how it works. If it works the same way as the fuel pump were it has a line from the tank one from the crankcase and one to the carb. Or is it plumbed right into the crankcase.

as dave said, get rid of thhe oil pump, or you risk blowing the engine again. easy to do, and you always know you have the right mixture in there when you mix your own. after a rebuild, run a 40/1 mix for the first tank and then switch to the recommended 128/1 mix.

I have been thinking of doing away with the oiler but I dont know the mix ratio.
Can anyone help with that?

"1989 ezgo smoking then quit"

We should all give ezgo a hearty congratulations for kicking the habit. :D

But yes, dumping the oiler is a good idea. I got my cart for $200 due to an oiler failure that trashed the piston.

Another question what would cause the engine to bog down when you are moving forward? (almost like it is not getting any gas)
but if you drive in reverse the cart moves just fine.
Would this be a timing issue. I allready changed the plug and took the carb off
and cleaned it.

Also how can I add a little more power to it?

Hey rweichold,

Welcome to BGW. BTW, there is no timing on a 2-stroke.

That sounds almost like you have a crank seal issue. To feed the engine gas, it needs suction from the crankcase. If you have an older cart that hasn't been rebuilt or had the crank seals done, this is a typical symptom. As the inside of the seals is rubber, it gets a wear pattern from going forward (allowing loss of suction), but this is minimized when running the motor in reverse.

Good news is that crank seals are cheap (>$6 each). Bad news is you have to remove the engine (surprisingly the easy part), the clutch (harder) and the flywheel (%$@#*&%) to change both. I just changed both of mine, and it tripled the time of my rebuild.

There is a test you can do - while the engine is running, spray some WD40 into where the clutch side seal is - if the motor revs up, you need new seals.
