Has anyone ever tried an ATV Silencer or something similar?

Has anyone ever tried an ATV Silencer or something similar on their cart? I put a new muffler on my '93 2-cycle last year but it is still just so darn loud. Is there anything you have added after the muffler to quiet it down?

It's not as simple as it sounds to change out mufflers to a different type. 2 strokes rely on back pressure to scavenge the exhaust gasses which helps to maximize performance.

That's why I want to add it after the muffler. Many companies make them for ATV's, Rhino's, etc. The companies claim they only change back pressure by about 2lbs., which would not make a big performance difference on our little 9 HP motors. I just have never seen one on a cart.

I gave this some thought, and my 2 cents would be probably not - even a small increase in back pressure can wreak havoc (IE the common issue of a gummed-up muffler - even a minimal amount of restriction can actually cause the cart to barely run or stop altogether) - also, I did a little searching and most of the silencers I found are designed (as you said) for ATV's, etc, which are pretty much with the exception of racing rigs 4-stroke engines.

I have seen here on the forums where people have welded an extension pipe to the outlet of the muffler to redirect the sound a bit - that wouldn't eliminate the sound but it might aim it somewhere where it wouldn't bother you or your passenger so much, just a thought

and another thing, a new muffler on a 93 should be pretty dang quiet - is there a chance that you have a leaky gasket at the cylinder or muffler or possibly a hole or ? in the exhaust pipe (common due to the layout of the exhaust on these, it's easy to kick up debris, etc and ding up the pipe or cause a small hole, which translates into a LOT of noise)

Hello, look at a racekartshop (Karts like mine, but 2 stroke.
To silence them down, they have a extra silencer after the original.
The onley rule is, don't make the pipe smaller (thin) as the first one.

And yes, two stroke will onley go well with backpressure and the right model / measurements of the first silencer.

Thanks for the input. I have made sure everything is sealed and there are no leaks. The combination of the open element K&N and the jacked up cart bouncing more noise up to us than when it was low is just annoying. I feel bad buzzing past my neighbors houses at 2am. They are cool and don't complain, but that is why I feel bad about it.

I am going to attempt a steel pipe silencer this weekend. I will try perforating the pipe with my drill. Then testing with and without it stuffed with course steel wool. I will try leaving the end open and then closed. Let's see what happens. It won't be pretty, but it is all hidden under the cart and it might just make her stealthy. I will report back.

Here ya go McGyver, an explanation as to why back pressure is required on a 2 stroke and why it takes some very clever sods to design it just so for certain applications. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_pressure. I spent many years racing 2 stroke motorcycles and used various expansion chamber systems on different tracks to provide the characteristics required to maximise performance and sound levels. In all that time I do not recall a single instance whereby the random use of a scouring pad ("steel wool") or random hole drilling in a system resulted in a more efficient,quieter system than those designed by the professional engineers of the time. Granted though, sneaking by neighbours at 2am was rarely an issue in those days unless we needed to "borrow" something

I am not looking to maximize performance. If my performance stays the same I would be more than happy. I am looking for quieter. I am also looking to mess around and have a little fun tinkering. Whether it works or not, I will have fun goofing with it. Either way you seem to be missing a key point. The stock and less than a year old muffler will remain in the stock location and create the same back pressure it always has. At the end of that 1" outlet I will attach a 1.5" "silencer" The silencer will be a straight through pipe with many holes drilled through it. This will not change the back pressure at all. It will only change the way the sound is distributed when exiting the exhaust.
