Re: 79 short spark
Sounds like it could be one of several issues, let's start with the easy one - pull all your ground cables (battery, frame, engine, etc) and clean them up thoroughly, both the places where they attach as well as the eyelets, etc - even a small amount of corrosion can cause erratic spark, etc as the engine tries to find a good ground (which usually ends up being through the choke cable, which never works out too well).
Next, being as you lost reverse before everything gave out, you're going to want to take a look at your forward and reverse switch assembly - best bet here is to pull all the wires one at a time and clean them up real good, then get a can of contact cleaner and spray the heck out of the assembly while working the F/R lever back and forth for a minute or two - these contacts often also become dirty, etc and can cause trouble. If no go on these, then the next steps depend on if your cart has points or a pulsar/electronic ignition (I can't recall which type 1979 used) - let me know which you have and we can go from there. |

Re: 79 short spark
thanks so much for replying. the info on this site has been a real help.this is my first experience with the carts.i saved this mid-seventies three wheeler from the jaws of the crusher. i was having the similar problem with the burst of spark when first cranking and then another burst upon letting off the cranking. it turned out to be the points weren't opening at all. i set the points and now it goes. i had my son haul my drunk *** all over the neighborhood last night, what a blast!
