Cool 1984 fuel pump issue ??

Hello all,

I have an issue with my cart that started last summer and I am just getting around to checking it out. My cart has ran fine until it fouled a plug, then the fuel just overflowed all over the ground. It also filled up the air cleaner. I discovered a tear in the fuel pump diaphram, so I got a new pump and it still would not fire. It has always started right up even after sitting over winter, but I cannot get it to fire. I have spark, compression and have sprayed starting fluid but still no pop. If anyone has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave

Thanks Tom, yes I have checked the fuel to the carb, I even bypassed the stock pump and installed a new electric pump last night that really puts out. I have not disassembled the carb yet, but cannot get it to fire by spraying fluid into spark plug hole or the carb intake. I will pull carb of today and check it out......thanks again

Wow, that sounds a bit frustrating! Welcome here BTW!

If the cart isn't even popping with starter fluid, I'm thinking there has to still be a compression or spark issue somewhere. I'd lean towards spark, as I got mine to pop, even with a shot piston.

First, drop all this talk of "Starter Fluid" or I'm getting the beating stick :)

Sounds like crank seals - if the crankcase got full of fuel (which sounds likely) the added pressure when you first cranked it over probably blew a seal (or both) ... You'll still have spark and compression at the cylinder, just nonoe in the crankcase to move the air and fuel where they need to be to run.

Brew City Music, right on the money. That is exactly what happened to me. If you are lucky it blew out the rear seal and you can see it flapping around on the crankshaft behind the clutch. In any case you should probably replace them both.

Cool Re: 1984 fuel pump issue ??

Thanks for the answers guy's...I have spark that shoots about an 1 1/2 inches, I rebulit the engine years ago and am aware of crank seals as I blew them out shooting nitrous to it...i.e. the reason for the rebulid as I torched the piston...I can see thee rear is in may take a look at the front tonight...thanks again Dave

I freak out at the mere mention of starting fluid and this guy jumps right into a sordid tale of Nitrous Oxide ....

Something tells me you're gonna fit in just FINE around here, Drag !!!
