1989 EZGO 2 Cycle Carb
My cart won't start. I am getting fuel as far as the carb. New fuel filter/fuel pump is working/replaced spark plug/cleaned out carb. Plug keeps on getting fouled. Starter turns, but there is no ignition. Compression is above 120. What's up?

What fuel:oil ratio you running? Or, are you using the oil injection still?

Spark, Compression and fuel. 1 of the three is missing! You have enough compression. I would check the Ignition with a spark checker at the end of the spark plug wire. If no spark exists, use the flow charts within these pages to narrow down your problem or just put in an HEI ignition.

If the plug is fouled it does indeed sound like you have no spark. Just take the plug out connect the ht lead, ground the body of the plug and crank the engine to see if you have a spark.

Re: 1989 EZGO 2 Cycle Carb
Just a thought,
If it does still have the oil injection hooked up, a dirty or plugged carb could be feeding pure oil to the cylinder, causing a no fire with plug foul. BTW ajkooch, welcome here. Just wanted to post a picture that shows what eventually happens when you leave the oil injection hooked up: |

Re: 1989 EZGO 2 Cycle Carb
Is there a way to test an ignitor to see if it is the problem. I don't want to buy a new ignitor if the one I have is still good.

Re: 1989 EZGO 2 Cycle Carb
The bad news is that you cannot test an ignitor. The good news is that you can replace the thing with a much better performing ignition for about $40. If you go that route search here for HEI modification and you will find a plethora of information.
However before you do that I am not so sure it will be the ignitor so if you are up for it here are a few tests. Get the back on stands and with a voltmeter on the battery start the engine and check the voltage. If the charging voltage is much above 16 volts it will overheat the coil and it will quit until it cools down. Ground issues are very common on these carts. Remove the cables from the frame near the battery and grind the frame to bare metal. Clean the lugs on the cables. There should be three cables, one from the battery, one to the FNR switch and one to the engine (this one is important). Another issue is the wires to the coil and solenoid breaking and being held in place by the rubber sleeve. You should take each wire off and then clean the crimp connector and gently tug on it to make sure that the connection is sound. Of course all this does pre-suppose that it is an electrical issue. Quitting when running wide open could also be a blocked fuel filter. Dave |

Here's the background. I checked the compression and it is 120. Great, but someone told me the compression could decrease greatly when the motor is heated. Is that possible? It runs fine when it is getting gas. No smoke or sputtering. Runs like a top. But is it possible that there isn't enough comprehension to provide suction for the pump. The pump is attached directly to the block. I am really running out of ideas. |
