New Member with Non Running 1996 EzGo Gas TXT, Where do I start?
This past week I was given an EZGO Golf Cart, which I was told didn't run. I've learned a lot over the last few days about them from reading here.
What I have found out is that I appear to have a 1996 EZGO TXT Gas Cart with a Robin 295. I dont have a key and the battery it came with is dead with EXTREMELY corroded terminals. After replacing the battery, cleaning the cables, and putting in a jumper in place of the key, and loosening the starter / generator. The starter / generator spins fine when the accelerator is pressed. I checked the oil, right level and clear. I then pulled the spark plugs and tried to rotate the engine by hand, it wont budge. So the question is, how much of a project do I have in front of me? Is it worth diving into? Am I better to part it out now? Am I likely to be rebuilding or replacing the engine? How much am I likely to spend for either and how much work? |

You might look into putting another motor in it.

I was wondering if this could be caused by a broken timing chain?

It is a timing belt and that will not keep an engine from turning at least a little. More than likely it is seized or a connecting rod has broke or seized on the crank shaft

So I suppose its time for surgery?!? Has anyone seen a good walkthrough or video on doing the rebuild on these robin engines? Or for tips & tricks? Any place that is recommended to buy the rebuild kit?
What price would I be looking at for a rebuild vs new engine? |

Easily around US$400 for two pistons and ringset, gaskets, connecting rods and bolts, machine shop for a possible rebore top oversize if pistons are stuck. That is the maximum you might spend depending on other parts if they have to be replace. I am assuming that there is no problem on the cylinder head (valves, springs and collets). On the low end, if some parts are still okay, maybe US$ 200, more or less. My cost estimate is based solely on my own experience.
